Stay close, figure it out. Inshore kelp. Safety first. Have your shit together.

I personally like Dana Point for small boating, quick run to the harbor exit and when it has been too rough on the outside there is always the harbor or off the beach (respecting the no boating markers of course)
Hourly information from the waverider buoy outside of DP harbor is located here - NDBC - Station 46223 when the average period starts getting close to the wave height I leave the tincan at home.

We take our 12' Gregor out of Mission Bay, to fish the kelp. Just pick your days and remember the wind usually comes up around noon. If the chop comes up put someone near the front to keep the bow down.

I take my 14' out to the kelp every weekend mostly out of mission. i had a couple of shady trips in during large swells. San Diego bay takes along time to get to the kelp and the launch ramp seems to be more crowded but you don't have the swell issue.
Good luck and stay safe.

I miss my little aluminum rig.
Pick your days and you can go a far as your fuel can take you.
I used to live on the wall with mine.
Fished all over LB harbor, up around PV, Izors and even out to the horseshoe.
Trust you equipment and watch the weather. If things start getting bad, turn around and go in.
Please ignore the stickers on the boat. Those were on there from the previous owner.

Matt- Be prepared for anything. Check the weather of course.
I like to have two of everything on board. GPS, radio"S"/cel, audible device,
throw cushion, fire extinguisher, flares, sounder, etc...
A biggy is watch out for the other boats... You'll be fine.

I agree with everybody. Watch the weather and make sure you bail when the winds start to pick up. I did it with my 15ft up in San Luis Obispo area for many years and that weather can turn on you quickly. Looks like you have a solid rig there. Fishing in the skiff really is a lot of fun. Let us know how you do!

Matt,
Let me know how it was. I usually go out to Los Alamitos bay and fish the drop offs for halibut or the wall for calico or spotted bay bass. Maybe we can team up and go. I have a boston whaler 13.5 sport rigged for back bay fishing. A trolling motor is the best!
