I've gone a few miles out in the morning with my 13' Gregor and 8hp honda...Gets a little shady but have taken on really big swells with no problem....

The bigger waves I've taken was in MDR t jetty,,, Some fucker in a 50' boat just comes haulin ass and makes a 10'+ wake about 50yds away.... Me and my buddy just following him to his slip and kicking his ass.... but my boat took on no water at all.

Picking the right day is key, I watch the weather at least three days in advance usually I watch it every day for a week wind and swell is the most important. You have to be willing to change your game plan at the dock. I put 210 miles on our 15' klamath w/a 25 4 stroke. I have a six gallon tank and take an additional five with me. I got dorado this year on the 181 and fished the nine top to bottom in and out for zero and ran to the 209 late for zero. I get about 90 miles out of that much gas so I only go 20-25 miles to fish so I can do some looking around and have plenty of gas to get home. I always start out running as far south as I want to fish and then work my way in a big loop north past my exiting harbor, when I launch out of Dana I make a heading at the 302 then work a loop out around the 9 then ride the swell home. Out of Oceanside I head at the 182 then loop inside the 181 to the 209 then home. If you are prepared for it you can definitly do it.
