Penn Squidder Problems

I'm having problems with my Squidders the dog does not engage on the upswing of the handle. If I loosen the drags all the way it engages but once I tighten it up it skips. I think the problem may be the fiber washer does anybody have a solution? I know its not the dog or the spring or the bridge.

I haven't seen the inside of a Squidder in many years but this is what may be happening to yours.
I'm thinking that the dog isn't pivoting freely when you tighten the drags. Maybe because of wear on the dog gear face(not sure if that's what you call that part) Are these older reels with lots of use?
Try to tighten the drag and pull outward on the handle, while turning, which will give the dog more clearance to pivot.
If this make the dog working correctly, you can rub the dog on sand paper to make it thinner.
You may be correct about the fiber washer. It may be smashed and swelled out which can prevent the dog from pivoting correctly.
And lastly, no heavy grease in the dog area.

Hope this helps
Scott

Try what Scott says to see if there is a burr on the dog or the bridge sleeve pawl. While you're at it, get a new fiber or phenolic washer for underneath your main gear. It's likely compressed and the main gear is binding your dog. Good luck.

WOW!

You just described the problem iv'e been dealing with for a couple of months now, I have a squidder that has accu frame and side plates. the anti reverse stopped working while fighting a 25# yellow that I landed, barely. Squidco replaced the dog& spring, and new shaft assy. It still did it so now I having the side plates replaced with stock plates. What I thought was the problem was as did squidco was the perch for the dog spring was corroded and the spring wasn't applying enough pressure on the dog to engage properly. I'm now after reading your post am now thinking it was the carbon fiber drags probably swelled slightly and is now rubbing on the dog enough to cause a problem. Dang, I hope I can catch them before they get the plates, I bet my accu's are fine.

Sometimes the binding is caused when people change out the 'almost' incompressible phenolic/fiber spacer for a drag washer, which is designed to compress. Whatever the case, if the pawl to main gear spacer gets compressed, it binds the dog.
