Knots work well on 50lb.

Like Keta said, knots work great. I use 50lb flourocarbon on my bounceball rigs and tied them with the albright for many years.

Swagging is probably what you think of as "crimping". A swage compresses a large surface area of the sleeve. A crimp is compresses a very small surface area, like many electrical connections.

Now I swage most everything with aluminum sleeves. It's super fast and once you have the right tools and components, you'll be knocking out professional quality rigs with chaff gear and stiff rigged hooks. No more barrel swivels.

For 50lb, I use a Mini Aluminum Sleeve with a .8 inner diameter and a hand swagger. You can hand swage up to 150lb mono then a bench swagger is needed for really big stuff.

A general rule of thumb for swage sizes by mono test is:
50lb - .08
100lb - 1.2
150lb - 1.5

The trick is to take a lighter and briefly burn the tag end once it's through the swage so it makes a bulb. Then pull it tight and swage it.

Hope this helps some.................

Rick

Though DaGoose provided a very thorough and knowledgeable (that a word?) response, my two cents worth. When using crimping sleeves for rigs, I try to send the mono back through the sleeves before crimping (the line's in there 3 times). I don't have a "swagger", and walk with a limp most of the time, so I use dykes and squeeze the sleeves 3 times each. I use two sleeves per connection, loosing a nice pulling fish to a slipped knot sucks (yeah, it's happened), imagine it would be the same to line slipping through sleeves and opening up.
