Are Reel Clamps Necessary?

Hey Guys,

Are reel clamps necessary? Going this weekend for albacore, fishing 20#, 25#, & 30# line. My rods have fuji graphite reel seats. I've never used reel clamps, are they necessary? Why do people use them? etc.

Thanks!

I can't prove either way, but I never fish without them unless its a freshwater setup. Hmm. never seen a clamp on a coffee grinder either. I say use it. Keep your rig together. Ya don't want to be the next spectacle who's stuff blew up when the reel and seat connection failed.

Ah yes, after 31 years in the insurance industry, and a highly practical degree in Political Science, I'm uniquely unemployable in any other field!

Thanks everyone for the input. Sounds like better safe than sorry, I'll err on the side of caution.

I only use them when going for bigger game and depending on the rod my calstar have the ring clamps to tighten the reel seating down and are pretty sturdy for deckhand like jim mentioned its a no brainer only way you can fish it. For inshore stuff no need for them either. Trolling a must. Depends what are you fishing and what are you using.

Also the bolt passing through the clamp gives youa place to keep your hook that is out of the way and not cause corosion or nicks to your guides.

Reel Clamps

I use them on the heavy stuff but don't feel they're really necessary. If they come with the reel, I'll put them on.

I consider it like wearing a belt with suspenders. JMHO C2
