| building a rod rack
my buddy steve(rooster1264) asked me to build him some racks to display his rods at the show next month and i thought i'd do a little how to out of the project also. the wood i used was knotty alder left over from a set of cabinets i built some time back but the design works well with typical lumber dimensions as well (1x6, 1x8 ect.) i always make 2 racks at a time to save time and material. the list of pieces required are ...
2-1x6x42
2-1x6x42
4-1x8x36
4-1x2x12
cut all pieces to size.
take 2-1x6x42 and mark center down length. mark 6" centers down center line. pic #1
drill 2" holes in one board and 1" holes in other. picture #2&3
rip both pieces down center leaving equal size notches in both pieces.
i sand all the notches with a holesaw wrapped with sand paper. pic #4
route all edges and sand smoothe.
mark center down length and lay out holes for screws. the supports will mount from the center out. the one with the small notches on top , facing out, 1" down. the bottom , with big notches, facing rearward, mounted 8" up from bottom. the board with no notches mounts at the bottom at a 45 degree . the 1x2x12 mount flush on the botton for stability. pic #5&6.
apply finish and there you go. it does'nt take a bunch of fancy tools and the wood can be bought fairly cheap. the finished product is a very handsome way to display your sticks.
