Brian | How do you know you'll get that specific spot once you get on the boat? I've never done the long range thing, so I'm not sure how it works.

Most of the time it's first in line, in my case I'm on a charter trip so it a combo of seniority and money in. I'm LLLOOOOOWWWW man on the totem pole so I'm towards the end of loading my gear. However most of the guys on the trip don't want to have to deal with the bending over every time they want into their box, which is just fine with me.

Plenty of hook tie off points as well as some rings between the rocket launchers that I hang extra Raider jigs from for quick access during wahoo bites. Box also sits on skids so it is up off the deck allowing water to flow underneath. Stainless corner protectors keep deck hoses dragged across the box from peeling the laminate off.
I paid $600 for it and we had three made at the same time (my buddies wanted one too).
Here is a couple of pics... | I'm planning on making one like that this week.. I'll post pictures, and if it's good enough I may end up making some copies with different designs (I'm a graphic artist) and selling them

From your post it sounds as if you have limited woodworking skills. I would suggest you make one or two practice boxes out of some cheap pine before you work on your final, more expensive box.
Fucking it up is usually part of the learning process. Not fun if your working with a $200 piece of lumber.
Good luck, follow a few tutorials and enjoy. NOthing like using equipment you made yourself.

Hey Brian, did you build your box yet? Any progress pics? If you need help cutting the pieces let me know, I got you covered on the table saw.

Whoa, it's dejavu all over again.
I did the exact same thing a couple years ago for the Royal Star.
Built a box based on the specifics of their tackle box island and all the hasseles and shortcomings of every other box I had seen and/or used.
Consider having a cabinet maker (lots of them around and looking for projects right now) build the basic box, and you just modify and finish it. Mine's made from russian birch plywood, whatever that is, and finished with several coats of urethane.
My rod holders are gimbaled and internal to the box so the rods and reels do not impinge on anyone elses 'space'. Throw some plano boxes, camera, etc inside and I'm good. That's just what worked for me for that specific application.
Actually, it was fun working out the design and dimensions etc. Cabinet guy charged me 20# of Yellow Fin Tuna filets and $20 for the brass hardware, etc.
Good luck!

Unfortunatly I haven't had a chance to get to work on it. I've finished the plans for it and was going to post to get feed back on it. Baseball and Football jsut ended last week and work's been busy. Hopefully I can get started on it this week! I'm gonna do a little lumber shopping this weekend!
John, thanks for the offer and I might just take you up on that table saw use!
Hey Jim, do you have any more pics of your box?

Now it's put your money where your mouth is.
