| Circle Hooks For Inshore/Island Use ?
Hey Guys.
I was fishing the sand bass on a local half-day boat recently and the captain asked me why was I using a ringed mutu (Owner 4/0) circle hook. I scatched my head and wondered what he meant. I always fish a ringed mutu for pretty much all applicatons, including on the larger Cat. yellows and wsb. He said that the circle hooks are only for offshore application.
I've always had good results with the circle hooks.
What's the deal?

I agree, they work great. Light wire for 15lb and less.

If using owner circles is GAY then I don't wanna be straight !! Just don't tell my wife and kids. But seriously, circles don't come unbuttoned. Once the hook is set, that fish aint coming off!

Dont listen to carl, he uses circle hooks when his boyfreind is around.
Seriously though, they do work great for everything just about. The captain has his preference and you have yours. Just remember that their is no need to set the hook with a circle hook just start winding. Maybe he was taking notes of your tecnique.
I personally love circle hooks!

I fish with a few 3/4 day deck hands and captains. They are still just starting to come around to the circle. It seems like the guys that need to swing for the fences hate circles. Fresh water bass and swim bait guys.
I have only pulled one circle hook. I was headed for the corner with an albie and saw a huge cluster fuck of tangles so I buttoned down and "pop". Thought i broke off but the hook came up with a peice of albie jaw!
It may not be as impressive as a big swing but fish count is fish count.

Circle hooks also improve the chances of successfully releasing a fish. They seldom gut hook. I use them for everything.

Ditto. Circles catch fish and they come in all sizes; I don't use anything else. If you want to swing on something go to the batting cages!

What do you all think of red hooks vs. bronze or silver hooks?

I lent a 6-pack captain my 15# setup and he whined about my circle hooks when we were at Catalina. I took it from him and brought up 4 calicos and a sheephead on the next two drops with that same setup. He is now one of my patients.
4/0 might be bigger than what you need for sand bass though, and as for the ringed hook, squid strips don't need to swim that freely.
