circle hooks all the way. just be ready to pay a little more for them. if you can hold off swinging you will out fish all the others on the boat.

here is a mahi i caught using a calcutta (with 15 lb test rigged straight to the hook with a dead chovy)off the hh buoy south of honolulu. i am certain i would not have caught this fish if i had'nt used a circle hook. the hook caught right in the corner of the jaw as advertised. no issues with line wear, thing was pulling me and my 14ft inflatable around for 45 minutes before i got it up. even better, it was the day after xmas and my father had sent me the rod and reel as a gift. he had lost a dorado off the west end of catalina that broke him off on the same rod. the only dorado he had ever had a chance to catch and he lost it. so i'm pretty much sold on circle hooks.

U caught 13 fish last year? Congrats.

I was fishing the sand bass on a local half-day boat recently and the captain asked me why was I using a ringed mutu (Owner 4/0) circle hook. I scatched my head and wondered what he meant. I always fish a ringed mutu for pretty much all applicatons, including on the larger Cat. yellows and wsb. He said that the circle hooks are only for offshore application.
I've always had good results with the circle hooks.
What's the deal?
I think they want to know why you are using such high quality hooks on a half day boat. It doesnt sound like he was dissing the circle.

Question Owner Mutu Light

I've only tried the Owner Mutu Light so far. Worked great on rockfish and calicos.

What other brands do you guys use?

I fish mostly for halibut using a fish trap. Is it a bad idea to use a circle in combination with a treble? set or no set???

I have bought some circle hooks, but have been afraid to try them out. They just don't look like they would hook. I can't wrap my brain around the motion that will "set" the hook. Does anybody know of a video on-line or some sort of animation that can show me what I can't visualize?

When it comes to hook applications, the only information that I have seen that I thought presented a comprehensive look at hooks was in an Eagle Claw brochure that I picked up at the Fred Hall show earlier this year. Without that, I would still be mostly clueless, short of seeing what the guy catching the most fish on the boat is doing. Now, I am only partly clueless. :-)
