We used offset circles for years tuna fishing with whole Butterfish but the last few seasons the Sardine's have been the go to bait . We changed to J's on our rental's/leaderspools and they have worked fine . as stated before you don't have to "set" the hook with the J's just lock up the reel after a four or five count and lift . I use the Circles for all my larger baits and Sword rigs . The Ringed Super Mutu has killed more than a few Swords/Big Eye's .

i would have asked the same thing. not just the fact that it's a super designer hook, for catching sand bass nonetheless, but the fact you were using a 4/0. that's huge for sandbass.
I've used em for corvina in the bay, but much smaller size...i still love my mustads, offshore or inshore, and probably won't fish anything else. then again i don't care if i lose a few fish, as long as i get the satisfaction of setting that hook.

Use what you want/like if it works for you. Some people once thought it was ridiculous to use 5/0 6/0 and 8/0 hooks for Calicos...

It's fishing ladies. Do it the way it works for you. If you have fun the way you do it then who the fuck cares if a sporty captain or some dumbfuck kid on the deck thinks you should do it another way. Just sayin'

As for shoreline fishing goes, circle hooks have been the preferred hook for years in Hawaii. Up to 18/0 for the slide baiters, barbed and barbless and for the same reasons as stated in the other posts, they work period (as long as you know how to use them) and it's easier to release a catch. The other preference here is the AH hook.
But it's most used for whipping out curly tails or other soft plastics.
Things is. Fish how you want to. It's your time and have fun.
Aloha

Just sayin' | have you ever thought about it from the captain's perspective or the dumb fuck on deck? they probably aren't trying to give him shit or make him feel dumb, they might just be trying to help him. why is everyone so quick to assume ALL deckhands and captains are dicks?

I use a lot of circles down here in La Paz, even on lures. We've had great luck with them on almost everything except trollin live small baits, where it seems as though due to the asymmetric bend the bait sometimes gets repinned on the hook. Great for dorado trollin' when the fishermen doesn't want to put down his beer too fast, leave the rod in the holder, have a swig, fish on. That's why our Captains call them "Automatico". Many of my marlin lures and almost all the Archer bars are circled thanks to advice from Ol' Capt. Fred. Guy knows his shit.

Thanks, Pargon. There's probably no faster way to shut a thread down than to start talking circle hooks in lures. Not too long ago it was the same with circles in bait. Oh, well, we crazy folk keep trying, no matter.
Now, go get some of them pargos, gorilla roosters and cabrillos on da bars and circles and get that new video shot. (And please, please, please, save me some of that terrible eatin' pargo meat...I'll trade you a couple of bars for 'em so's I can feed 'em to my cat, ya know?)
You guys have to be one of the few operations down there that not only cuts the fish for your customers at no cost, but has it done professionally, with the heavy duty vac packing and expert cutting. That costs and arm and a leg up here. The stuff that I've gotten from you and cooked up has been danged near the same as pure fresh. That's some special service, I'll tell you that.
(Kissing up, of course, so's I kin get summa dat pargo stuff fer mah kitty kat and dem doggies, whut'll eet enythang.) PLEASE DON'T CONFUSE US WITH ANY NEWBIE, SIMILAR SOUNDING SITES AND CATALOGS. WE HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING OUR PRODUCTS AND SERVING FISHERMEN FOR NEARLY TWENTY YEARS NOW. |
