How I cut bugs

I realize that most of you that go hooping regularly know this but I'm thinking that new folks may find this of use.

The following series of pics shows how I cut/clean my bug catch. The first thing is to icewater down my catch - it takes the frisky out of them in about 10 minutes and makes it much easier to cut.

Nice post Steve.

That's exactly how I do it to.

I have another good tip.

We buy foil roasting pans at costco for $.50 each in a big pack.

I clean the bugs OVER the pan, then I stack all the heads in the pan and set them in the garage freezer.

On trash day I take out the big pan o' lobster nastyness and set it on top of the trash. No mess or stink.

Good tip Ali
Although I personally enjoy seeing the trash men almost pass out when they take the lid off the can that the bug heads have been stewing in all week

I put them in the freezer for a half hour to "de-spunk" them and then you can just firmly grab the tail and twist to remove the tail....No cutting necessary....You can do the whole bug with no tools whatsoever... I do cut the spines off first before vacuum sealing to aviod puncture....

I'm lucky enough to have a couple outlets for the bug heads - one is my friends Philipina wife - she really would rather have the body than the tail and plus she gives up vast quantities of lumpia & pancit. The other place that wants them is our local sushi bar and that has its benefits as well.

I used to just tear the tail off as well but you get that extra bite of meat by cutting them.
I also cut the spines off if I am vacuum sealing them.

I also twist em off and I can guarantee there is no tail meat left in the head.

How do I know? I steam the heads up for soup.

7 heads yields alot of stock and approx 2lbs of meat from the antena roots and the leg ends. It takes about an hour to do.

if your buddies don't want theirs it's lobster soup for a month for me.

Oh yeah, the stink garbage. It stink even after you've boiled the heads.

Sea Hag Pam told me to sprinkle ground cinnamon on them before disposal...Haven't tried it but it sounds like it would work!

I do mine in the kitchen sink ,but one thing I do after Ive got the tail in my hand and before I depoop them is I feel that I have to put the head in a plastic bag.I know its kind of weird but I feel better if I feel the bug isnt watching me stick its antenna up its ass.
