| Progear Oceanus question
I just bought a Progear Oceanus. I was wondering what is the max # line i can fish with this. Can i fish 50lb test with it? Also if I fish 50lb can I use 65lb spectra backing or do I have to use 80lb backing? Thanks in advance, John

Theoretically you could... Drag-wise it delivers 14# at strike and low twenties at full. It is a bit small so you could fill it nearly full of 65# spectra and then use a 50 yard topshot of 50#. IF I was going to use it as a "palmable" 50# rig, I would fill it almost completely with 80# spectra and (reverse albright) a 10 to 15' fluorocarbon shock leader.
How do you plan to use the reel? I have thought for some time about getting an Oceanus before the price goes up. I'm sure they aren't going to sell that reel for very long at $225.

Thanks for the reply Corey. I'm not really sure how im going to fish this reel. I got a great deal on it, bought it from some guy moving out of state for $140 brand new in box so I couldn't let that offer pass me by. I'm going to Cabo in the end of May and plan to take it with me. I will be taking a 4/0 for fishing 50 but i was thinking of using this one instead and letting my buddy use my 4/0. I will probably use this primarily for bait fishing. I have a daiwa sealine x 40sha and a saltist 30th that I use as my yoyo reels locally. I prefer those type of rounded handles for the jigging. Not sure what to do with this oceanus. I have never owned a leverdrag before. Still trying to decide if I should go with the 65lb test spectra or 80lb.

How much top shot or leader you want should determine the class of spectra you put on that reel. With spectra use, I think it's really a 30 or 40# reel. However the drags, the capacity when filled with spectra, and the strength of that reel can lend themselves to you fishing 50# line?!?! Despite the fac that it's a 3/0 "sized" reel. I would fill it with 80 and put a short shock leader on it. You will feel every twitch of your bait and your bait will swim better without dragging 20 to 50 yards of 50# mono around. I think you'll get bit more. Just change the shock leader every half dozen fish or so.

You don't need 80# spectra for 50# mono. I'd go with 300 yds of 65# spectra then about 75 yds of 50# mono on top.

For the Oceanus owners: How much 65# spectra does that reel hold?
Past 50#, it doesn't really matter what weight class of spectra you have on there. There is only a 2# (equivalent mono diameter) difference between 65 or 80. You could put 100# spectra... The bottom line is put the one that gets you in the ballpark of total reel capacity that you want. i.e. 300yd, 400yd, etc. In my opinion , (outside of a 50W) having 500yds of any spectra is kinda over kill and a waste of money. I fish whatever spectra class the reel will hold that gets me upwards of 400 yds. Good luck with this...

I figure with the 2# (mono equivalent diameter) difference between 65 and 80# spectra... one would get 350yds of 80# spectra or more. That would be cheaper than 65#, and the last 100 yds might see the light of day sometime.
