Newell 332/ greased ht-100's buckled down tight. 40# long top shot 75-100yds, 65# spectra(Power Pro etc.)300yds. Now you have plenty line. Only gunna get 250 of straight 40# on 332.
You'll only need to change 75-100yds instead of 250+. saves money over long run. Learn to tie albright and get a 1/2lb spool of 40# and yer set for a while. throw the 7x

For 30 pound line: Newell 332 or 338, with greased ht 100's like sdfishkiller said. Newell bearings just have to be kept clean & lightly oiled. Even then, they should be replaced once or twice a year depending on how much you fish.
For 40 pound line: Torium or Saltist 20 or 30 (whichever feels better in your hands), carbontex drags, degreased & hot sauced bearings.

You could give me either a 332 or a Torium 20 with fresh drags. Both are outstanding reels.
The torium has a faster gear ratio and stronger drag, wheres the Newell is built to last longer with all stainless parts and nothing plastic of brass inside to break or rust.
Both are excellent, get one of each!!

If my Newell isn't making noise I start to get worried. If a Torium is making noise, throw it away.

If I dont have to hit my left side plate bearing with my fist before I cast a dine, im worried something is wrong.
Actually, I sent mine to Kens to have overhauled, as I know longer have the disposition to do it myself, and they feel butter smooth. The 229 is going back in the arsenal and the trini14 is going up for sale.

Fish a 533 for 40#. It has 4/0 drags and geas and is much better suited for 40#. FYI, the Newells cant handle spectra. I broke one at work today from a guy who wanted spectra on his P332. It sucked when it happened. I felt bad for the guy.

A Newell 332 or 338 will throw iron on that 10 footer like a demon, but don't forget to use the thumbdrag. You'll need it with 40#. Quote: |
