Avet jx 6/3 (or mx if your a tightwad) Newell's suck for any thing other than Sand bass or calico's. If you put 40lb.max try using an Avet SX 5.1 with the 35/65 Spectra. You will Cast FaRRRR and you can have plenty of drag and your reel will not become cracked or twist on the clamp when you catch a 40lb fish Comprende ? Newell=crap!!! Torium=heavy Avet= $$well spent.

The question I have is what is the recommended grease to put on the washers and how much do you put on? I assume it is a real thin layer or do you goop it on? Any other tips as far as reassembling the reel, like where to avoid getting the drag washer grease, etc., would be greatly appreciated. Also, should I oil the bearings in a new reel out of the box or leave them as is.
Thanks guys... | What huh ? :kiss_ass:

Well since this thread is miraculously still alive I thought I would give my input on both of these reels(since I purchased both of these reels from the time the thread was started, I figure I should close this thread myself)
Torium 20: Used for about one month of 6 day a week barricuda bonito fishing, the first day of the next month I hooked a 26lb yellow(pictured on left). The big ass torium handle bashed my hand since the anti-reverse stripped right at the start of the fight. I killed the fish, at the expense of one torium 20... I bet you could replace the anti reverse but I don't like how it broke in the first place.
Newell 332 p series: Was my favorite jig throwing reel for a season, took on some yellows and squids. Which raised my level of confidence enough to bring it on my 10day. All was well, caught some fish until the 7th day, we stopped on some porpoise and made a circle, I casted with the long rod on a boil got bit and the SNAP! Lost my jig and something happened to my reel. Felt "lop-sided," pressure when I was retrieving line, a "scratching" friction sound when ever the spool moved. The tuna we hooked at this spot were 60-120 lbs.
Both reels had 40lb on. I decided not to fish either reels anymore, saltists are a better choice, but Ill stick with my 500, never had one problem with it and its caught more fish than my newell and torium combined. I bet if you fished 30lb with the appropriate drag there wouldn't be a problem with either.
Thats just my experience,
Ken

Is this how you always seem to have an answer for me when i get on the boat? Ive been thinking long and hard. Toriums can be a pain in the ass to take care of and there quite a bit heavier than the newell P332, but the new newels are being made with gears with a lower grade stainless steel than the old ones, not to mention the bearing need to be switched. Ive been fishing by torium20 on my Terramar 86XH for a couple years now and gotten some great fish, but ill see you next weekend with a 100J & a P332. we'll figure it out once and for all.
