"For 30 pound line: Newell 332 or 338, with greased ht 100's like sdfishkiller said. Newell bearings just have to be kept clean & lightly oiled. Even then, they should be replaced once or twice a year depending on how much you fish."
HUH? Guess I need to fish more. A few years of 6 day a week fishing, several years of sitting then back at it. My 338 is almost 20 years old and is stock 'cept for the greased ht's. It makes a little sing, just like new. I can still outcast anything in my arsenal with that thing. The SX is catching up though, just with lighter jigs.
"FYI, the Newells cant handle spectra. I broke one at work today from a guy who wanted spectra on his P332. It sucked when it happened. I felt bad for the guy."
Matt, what the hell are you talking about? Spectra is way easier on spools than mono. Are you talking increased drag pressure? What the hell broke on the reel?

I'm sure he did it while spooling up. Unless you want it to dig in while fishing you have to put it on very, VERY tight!! I wouldn't try to put spectra on a newell as tight as I put it on an Avet or other billet aluminum reel....

I would Go with the T20... i use it all the time with no Problems..
If u are throwing iron the T20 is alot more easier on the crank with its high hear ratio
but then again Newells are made to last forever and has been killing fish for a long time
i just dont like the noise it makes

It's not on the list but I would get a Saltist 30 or 40. Better out of the box than the toriums and they are bulletproof. I've beaten the crap out of mine and they still are in perfect working order.....

| Ill rephrase myself. Becarefull when winding spectra on newells. Ive had issues with them breaking.
Yea spectra is way easier to wind than mono but it needs to be wound on tighter than mono and when that happens, it tends to put more stress on reels and that was the case with the newell I was winding spectra on. On this reel, the drag seazied up about 150 yards into winding the specta on. I stopped winding line on after i heard a pop. Thought it may have been the gear but it was the drag. I didnt pull it apart to see what happened exactly since I had a ton of line to wind.

I've put all my spectra on my newells with the help of a friend holding spool and applying enough pressure to pack it on tight, "Human" tight, not "machine" tight. You pack it on too tight and too fast with a machine and bad things will happen.
