I have a Calcutta 400s, Newell 229 and a Trinidad 14.The Calcutta chucks anything light(fly-lined) a mile! The 229 launches a Tady 45 a country mile! And at twice the price, The Trinidad does both just as well.Do you want a couple of 17-20# class rigs or one to get the job done! I use the Trini 14 and my daughter uses the other 2!

Get the Newell I've fished those reels for over 20 yrs. now and have never had a problem. You should definately keep the drags and bearings clean and greased. My favorite jig reel is the P332 loaded with 40 it is super light and throws a jig a country mile. It doesn't have the ability to hold a hole bunch of line but if that becomes an issue you brought the wrong gun for the hunt. I have caught plenty of large yellows to 40 lbs. on the reel and it handles them just fine. And as far as the gear ratio goes dont forget jigs were designed many years back when 500's and other slower reels ruled the market I think a jig swims a hell of a lot better in a slower speed than rippin' them in. Just my opinion.

You needed to ad the Daiwa Saltist 40 these make the Shimano torium look like a tinker toy.

Toriums were supposed to be for 40-50lb use, but the hardware is more for 20-30lb stuff. Underbuilt where it counts, but good newbie reels.

I'm a huge newell fan but the new drags they put in them a crap and the torque not so good either but the torium 30 is a great reel.
