Re: new 30lb reel?

Torium 16 or a Newell 332. Both less than $200 with line and spectra

Either one of these will fill the bill, plus they don't corrode

332 16.6 5:1 or 3.6:1 25-40 25/390 30/320 $134.24
338 16.9 5:1 or 3.6:1 25-40 30/380 40/300 $139.24

At Charkbait

Re: new 30lb reel?

Yep, Sealine or Newell 338. Nice light spools. If you don't mind the heavier spool crown, the AVET lever drag JX or even MX would work depending on what capacity you are looking for.

The downside to the Newell is the drag will not be as beefy or as smooth as the lever drag. Even with that, I have yet to burn one up or lose a fish due to the drag. Using HT's with Shimano or Cal's grease smooth's up the drag.

The downside to the AVET is the spool takes a little more to get moving. That's nothing that a little time with the reel can't fix. Spend a few more $$ and you can have a two speed!

With the Sealines 6-1 ratio, you lose some torque on bigger fish. Greased felt drag is very smooth.

I own and still fish them all. You can't go wrong with any of them. My fishing has been from about the 1010 area North. No long range stuff.

Re: new 30lb reel?

Daiwa i use is slx40hv which is lower 4.9:1 ratio, perfect for me. charkbait has whole slx series on sale @79.95, but shv 40 and 50 are sold out.

Re: new 30lb reel?

The Diawa's are great, all mine are the 6-1. I've only got the two 20's one 30 and then the big 600. The 600 is from the early 80's and the older 20 is from '88 or '89. They all work great to this day. I have two of the newer Grandwaves as well. Some parts are very fragile. The little plastic piece that covers the handle nut is truely lame. Their use of self tapping screws also leaves a little to be desired.

Re: new 30lb reel?

I just upgraded my Torium 20 to go with a GUSA 80MegaMag from Noah's. I like the torium cause its super user friendly and is comfortable out of the box. I also pulled on the CS 270 8h at Noah's and it felt like a fun stick. If I were you I would go to your tackle store and try some different reels on the same rod or bring yours in. There's nothing worse than buying a rod or reel and it not feeling right after you spend the money...good luck.
