Planning a trip to Baja next June, and need some new gear. I will be jigging for Yellowtail among other things. Speed, drag, and cranking power are obviously the key factors. That said, what would you suggest? Torium30, Saltist STT50H, Accurate 870XM, Ocea Jigger 4000, Kaikon 4000, Avet LX 2 speed, or something else? I just can't decide |

The 4 to 1 ratio, 665 is an absoulete beast. Massive amount of drag and torque. 4 to1 is what the Yellowtail specials are.

I thought high speed retrieve was a big factor in getting bites?! I have got plenty of lower geared work horses/ I think the 665 HXM is 6:1.

They have the 665 in 4 to 1 and 6 to 1. Either one would be a good choice IMO. I dont wind real fast on certain retrives with 6 to 1 reels so on a 4 to 1 you can just spped up the wind and have so much more cranking power when you need it.

The 665XHM is a finely machined reel, and winds line faster than any reel I've ever used, unfortunately, it has no torque. I ended up selling mine, because as nice as it was, the effort it takes to turn the handle when reeling on a yellow is rediculous.
There are a lot of better reels for your application that won't kick your ass; my choice (assuming you'll be using for iron or big baits) would be a TN20 or Saltiga 40 with spectra.

Like you said, LX (or JX) TWO SPEED. Get the best of both worlds. Power and speed and a lever drag.

zzsdad and tunalvr, what about the torque on that reel in high gear? I ask only because I have an MXL 6.3 and compared to a Trini or Salti, it was work to use against big fish. Just seemd like it lacked the torque or maybe it was just a little sloppier? I haven't fondled the LX or JX 2's. I do think the lower gear is a nice option when needed. Anyone know the Ocea Jiggers or Kaikons?
Obviously you can gain more line by simply reeling faster, but I am looking for something dedicated to high speed jigging. Am I wrong in thinking that gear ration and inches of line retrieve are important factors?

yoyoing for yellows, I'd get the JX 2 speed. For more general purpose get the LX as it holds more line.
Accurates are nice and all but I think that I'd rather have a 2 speed avet for less money.

LX or JX 2 speeds. Accurates are nice, but double the cash. Good luck!
