| New Avet- Sandpaper Drags?
Just got my new MXJ in the mail today- a factory blem with a small discoloration spot. Not too noticeable and got a decent price on it. I started playing with the reel and noticed a couple of things that were different from my other MXJ (Purchased at a tackle shop in January and I love it). First it seemed a little "geary" (borrowed that term from another thread). I can deal with that, but it's more noticeable than my other one. Could it just need to be "broken in"? Second thing that bothers me (didn't notice this at all on my other MXJ) is that the drag feels and sounds like sandpaper. It doesn't feel sticky or anything, just sounds like sandpaper rubbing on metal. Again, is this something that just needs to be broken in over time, or is there something wrong? My other MXJ was the display model (was last one they had) and maybe it was played with enough that it was broken in a little bit. Thanks in advance for the help.

Not conforming, I really like my other Avet. I have Daiwa, Penn, Abu Garcia, Quantum, and Mitchell reels, not to mention an old Curado, somewhere in the garage ( in pieces) . I THINK YOU NEED TO GO PUT ON MORE LIPSTICK AND STOP RAGGING ON AVETS. WE GET IT- YOU DON'T LIKE AVET. SO WHAT. A LOT OF PEOPLE DO. |

I'm just teasing you based on the other thread.
Sorry, I thought it was funny...
If your reel is grinding and the drags feel rough, I would send it in to the manufacturer (regardless of the brand). I know that Avets usually wind rough, but the drag thing doesn't sound right.
Better safe than sorry...
BTW, that's not lipstick. I had my lips tattooed black so that I can always be super goth and not have to worry about reapplying too often...

It's a new DRY drag. They are one of the last holdouts to not put grease on the drag. The last AccuCrap 665 I bought is the same way.

The drag problem could be a product of a relatively "bumpy" drag surface at lower pressures. This normally goes away at normal drag settings. But if should not be like that at normal strike/full drag settings.
The "geary" part, only thing I can think of is 1. By some odd coincidence you got one of the 1st gens that was louder or 2. They didn't grease it well.
Either way - call the seller and/or Avet and have them deal with it. You paid for it - if something is funny someone owes you a proper one.
