Spinners VS Conventional

I was reading the 2 posts from Cape Cod on the front page and it looks like a lot of the east coasters and other places use spinners on giant tuna and other fish. Seems like in Cali or the West Coast most of us use conventional or casting reels.

Is one better than the other? Is it just preferance?
Is it a Geographic thing? Do west coasters just prefer casting or conventional?

Anyone have any thought?

Coffee grinders have there place, but not on a west coast long range sport boat. Anytime I see a someone using one on a long range boat it takes forever to bring in the fish. Remember east coast people fish 30lb sitting down with harness lugs. Gotta tell you where there heads are. !!!!

I asked this question before. Just comes down to preference and how you grew up fishing is the way I see it. Geography does have something to do with it, and I don't know why.

I read posts where the spinner guys standing up bring in fish just as big as conventionals. Check out videos on youtube, you'll see.

Yeah I have seen the vids on youtube pretty sick, just didn't know if maybe the peeps using spinners did so cause it was more of a challenge to bring in the fish, or what the reasoning was. On my lighter stuff for the surf i use spinners. just wanted to get peoples thoughts.

been fishing them on the semi long range boats for two years.. the little SR12 loaded w 50lb spectra and have noticed a three to one hook up rate over conventionals.. not just me but "novices" asking to borrow the reel.. thats when i picked up on it seeing jackpot albies yellows(fin n tail) dorado and bluefin all being caught by "novices".. started watching closely.. what ive seen ..
:casting the bait farther and lower to the water w/o stunning the bait by slapping it down on the water.. (and being able to cast midship with a flick) still cant do that w a conv.
:freedom of the bait.. think about it, 3 feet of flouro directly to 50 spectra.. almost no drag.. no fighting the friction of a turning heavy spool either.. spectra just falls off the spool with feathering(finger against the spool for control)
more natural lively presentaion= jackpot
i watched for a year, used it all last year, and this year..
problems were tying 20 or 30 fouro directly to spectra.. could never come up with a knot that wouldnt slip or break.. flouro is much harder than mono and spectra doesnt "dig in" to flouro like it does mono w is softer... sooo i use a swivel.. polomar and a sandiego....
also setting the drag lighter and using a softer rod for shock absorbancy.. easy to pull hooks with no stretch..
just my two cents

I have been preaching the joys of the spinners on West Coast Long and Short range boats for years and years. Now that the big boys (I use exclusively Accurate Spinners in 12, 20 and 50 size) are building spinners with amazing drags, built tough and smoothness of operation the industry has taken it to an entire new level. For bigger tuna on Long Range boats spinners may not be for everyone but Jason is right. Most fishermen, new comers and experienced anglers alike, can get their baits in the zone faster and cleaner with a spinner which translates into more bites. Granted, unless you fish a Thunder Down Under like mine, you cannot rail rod a spinner, but once you learn how to use a spinner you can catch 3 digit tuna without a ton of problem from a West Coast Long Range Boat.

As someone said, Spinners have their place for those who choose to use them. I choose to use........

Anyone know how to mount a spinner on a deckhand rod? I know it's not the same but I already have too much stuff and want to find a cheap way to use what I got.

You can use hose clamps. The issue you will have though is the guides on a conventional stick are not made for spinning reels. You want larger guides due to the line coming off the spool differently than a conventional.

You really want to buy a dedicated spinning rod with a reel seat and the correct style of guides IMHO.

I took my jigging rod on my 10 day and this past 5 day. You will catch fish on a spinning rod. Learn the correct techniques to fish it and you will kill fish with it.
