newell p229

Hey guys I am looking into a newell p229 for a jig reel. I was wondering what you guys thought of the reel for this purpose and what rod to match it up with. Thanks and may God bless.

Find one of the F series models that are aluminum instead of graphite (those are the ones I prefer) and find a 7 or 8' cork tape jigstick for a decent price and you'll have a bulletproof setup that will last you the rest of your life!

I've got twelve G229F or G235F with the red stripped handles. I get them on Ebay mostly. They can throw a sardine farther than any other reel I've tried. As well as having a strong clicker for halibut fishing in free spool. The rod does not matter. However i like a 6.5' rod so it fits in my cutty.

F series? Is that an East Coast thing? The P-series is the aluminum Newell on the West Coast, and M (medium) and F (fast) are the gear ratio designations. Those F-series Newells are rare, I've only seen a few and they were all 440's and 447's.

Yeah, that'll play. A 300 sized Newell on any decent jigstick puts you in the game.

My bad.....just looked at my reel and P229-F....it's one of the older reels that has aluminum parts (not the graphite).

I think he's talking about a P229F.
Casts great but since the Saltigas
came out, it's been my backup reel.

P229= great 15 to 20# reels for tossing chovies or sardines for the 3 B's and school size tuna.

P332 for tossing jigs like recomended above.

Put 50# spectra backing and a 60 yd topshot on it. Has the same drags as the 332. I use one locally for the 3 B's paired with a Calstar GG100J.
