i would go with a 50 narrow and topless,if you are going to get a 50. if you get an accurate,it is ready to go right out of the box. for value i would go with a penn 50 noarrow, topless.then i would have it reworked to fit you specifications and to increase the free spool. any reel you get,i would ultimately have reworked to get max performance vs stock off the shelf performance.
as mater of fact, you should consider the reworking of any reel you purchase before you buy. when you get down there and it is a scratch bite for 10 fish ,you need the maximum performance available from you gear in order to be one of the 10 lucky ones.goo

my 2 centavos...all the reels in the poll will do the job - even box-stock. one misconception is that some need tweaking and some dont. the ADT need help as bad as the others. the standard ADTs free spool is mediocre and the stock drag cam has a usless curve toward the low end of its range. Cal does a tidy business tuning ATDs with custom cams, sleeves and bearings - as much so as penn, shimano, etc.

Replying to a question about using small two speed reels for 40 lb, I put up a link to an article written by Bruce Smith. I think his take on bait presentation is relevant to this discussion. Techniques of live bait presentation on heavy tackle

Money no object: ATD 50 or Avet T-RX-50.
"Value" a consideration (like wanting to buy a rod too): Shimano or Penn or Avet Pro EX.
The value 50w's have killed more Cows and big fish world-wide than any of the "Ferrari" type reels (as sweet as they are) so the value reels definitely work too.

triple wrapped XXXXH, 5 to 5.5 ft. , rollers ? sky's the limit. mine has rollers at the 1 and 5 position, the rest guides. if you're really going to put the strain on it alot, a Trex or the Accurate, nothing less.

Don't make the mistake I made and invest a bunch of $$ in a big reel. It's not necessary and you will rarely fish it. The best way to go is rent an outfit, if you're convinced you need a big reel, I've got a Penn 50TW for sale cheap! It's been 2 speeded, drag enhanced and free spooler kit. 750 yds of 130# hollow Power Pro....great multi-purpose rig. Kite, chunk or bait and not too expensive. I'll even toss in a couple of wind-on leaders. PM if you're interested.

If you rent a cow reel what do you get? Is it in good shape/up to the task. I have my share of money in reels but i know i will only take maybe one cow trip every 2-3 yrs and really would rather spend my money on the gear i get more use from. Has anyone caught a cow on a rental?

Just to clarify what appears to be a misconception regarding Penn VSX series reels, and needing to have aftermarket work done on them.
No doubt that 5-year old and older Penns need to have Cal's magic done on them in order to effectively fish cows, especially with sardines.
The VSX models are ready to go out of the box, assuming that you want to fish what is now considered "customary" size lines. That is; 60 pound on the 16VSX, 80-100 pound on the 30VSX, and 100-130 pound on the 50VSX.
Of course Cal Sheets is always pushing the envelope, and does some nice work on the the 16VSX to make it a 100-pound reel, or make a 50VSW perfect for 150-180 pound.
The one thing that some VSX owners may want to do is de-grease the bearings and add the speed-oil product of their choice, but factory specs will always call for grease.
BTW, a 16VSX and two of the original 50VSX "test models" are still onboard the American Angler as loaners/hooknhand/kite reels, receiving minimal care and service for over 4 years. Both of the 50VSX's have at least two 300-pounders and literally dozens of 200-pounders to their credit, and the 16VSX is the go-to hooknhand reel on mid-grade 100-pound class fish.
