| floaters!
woke up thursday morning and was seeing spots in front of my eyes. no flashing lights, but the fucking things were still not gone by noontime so i called my doc. i got a referral to the opthamalogist yesterday, had an exam and she told me that i just had floaters.
this floater that i have is a huge sucker! apparently, there is a ring of tissue around the back of the eye. if it lifts up by itself, it casts a shadow on the retina and that's what is seen as a "floater." rarely, it pulls up the retina with it. lucky for me, the retina was still attached. over the next several weeks, this floater should just dissolve.
i was just imagining the doc telling me that i would be scheduled for surgery on monday. then i'd have to tell her, "sorry, doc, i'm going fishing on monday. we'll have to schedule this for the following monday!" hey, the bite at guadalupe is off the hook right now. there is no way that i am missing out on this bite. we board the spirit of adventure on monday the 6th, back on saturday the 11th.
well, isn't that why we all have two eyes?

Alan, you have done so much for us with regards to reel tutorials, if the floaters are in anyway a result of eye strain etc. attributal to reel repair please stop.
We wanna see you catch fish, you have done enough for us salty bastards.

Wow, never heard of that. I am glad things seem to be ok. Best of luck on your trip and I hope your "floaters" go away soon.

Hope you have a blast and a speedy recovery.

Al, i have an ongoing issue with floaters. they appeared suddenly as in your case about 15-yrs ago. my friend who's legally blind from type-1 diabetes and by default an expert on these matters hooked me up with his specialist. I was warned about a detached retina (very serious) but turns out im fine and have suffered nominal damage probably from years of following RC aircraft around the sky - often starring right into the sun.
there are extreme therapies to reduce floaters like removing the vitreous fluid (yikes). i understand floaters are a result of some trauma to the eye and are merely small blood globules, etc. also brought on by age. for me they seem to be more prominent/visible in certain light like when the sun is lower in the sky as in the fall/winter season. thank your lucky stars its not your retina...
I'll let you know about the handles when you're back.

Everyone has floaters! I have a special light that helps my students see the damn things in a lab I run at my HS. I am sorry to hear you have a big one. Good to know that you can wind on fish with your eyes closed. Be careful running down the deck with a hot one. Have fun and catch all you can.

I have floaters also.
They come and go.
Had my eyes checked and my floaters were quite small and was told not to worry.
It's just a bother at this time.
Good luck at the Lupe!
