Anywhere from a 700XL to 700M depending on your topshot with the 700L being my favorite.

If you want to have some serious fun pair it up w/ a Glass 6455, #30 topshot and you have a real lightweight tuna killer.

I kind of like 8ft sticks better.

7ft seems kind of short now a days.

I fish mine with full 50# spectra and fluoro shock leaders from 15 to 35#.... That said I mate my 197 to a custom cut/wrapped Calstar 700L. I took 3" off the tip and 3" off the butt to drive it out towards the end of it's weight class and cut the length down to 6.5' for better leverage. This rig slayed dodo's and yellows down at Cedros/Benitos this summer by the dozens.

I think it would all depend on what weight classyou would be fishing this reel with.

For me
25# - 700L
30# - 700M
40# - 700MH

I'm with you on the 8 footers.
20# Calstar 800XLH
25# Seeker 270H-8
I also have a GUSA 85XF that I use for 20# and I really like that rod too.

Being an Avid Accurate Guy and a custom rod builder you have several choices.

The 197 can fish a wide range of line classes. So Just one rod might not fit the bill but if thats what your looking for your going to have to make a decison on rod length.

As you can see from all the responses everyone has an Ideal rod length that they prefer because that what works for them.

I have fished many of the rods mentioned already. My preference is an 8' stick. It will cast alittle further, double up to fish jigs if needed.
I dont see anyone fishing more than 40lb test with this reel althought it will no problem.
So I would say 30lb test would be the normal maximum...Minimum would be 15lb test...

So that would set you up for a rod that would fish within those guide lines.

I'm a CalStar guy so I would would put you into an 800L or the 700L...Seeker makes some really nice blanks that fit the bill as well..
The 800XLH would also be a good choice.

If you can have your rod built by your local custom rod builder..

Wow great guys.
For now I've got it on a 800xl with 20lb.
I also have the 270h Super Seeker.
I'd like to get the 800xlh maybe down the road.
Thanks for all the input.

Tight lines all

David

I would consider the Phenix. I don't have one yet, but they are quickly becoming a favorite rod of mine. Now I just need to get my hands on one...
