Fishing Reels Thread, Saltist 50 for surface iron... in Fishing Related; Hey guys. I really wanted to get some opinions here before I pull the trigger. I know, I know. I ...
Hey guys. I really wanted to get some opinions here before I pull the trigger. I know, I know. I have been spending all day reading "surface iron" threads and I know there are a lot of them. Lots of suggestions out there like a 332, 338, 533, Trinidad 20, 30, 40, Torium, etc etc etc.
Here is where I stand and what I am asking...
I want one reel to fish either 40 or 50lb on a glass 90j. The response I expect the most is the Newell 533. In my opinion, that is a fine reel. It's light, holds lots of line, bla bla bla. However, I am beginning to have a problem with Newell's, and for the sake of this thread, lets consider that I really do not want another newell. I think the Saltist 50 is my answer but I am open for other suggestions.
So, I want a reel that fits these specifications along with a few open ended questions...
1. I do not want to fish with spectra to the rim. I like all mono during my cast and want there to be up-to at least 100yds of 50lb mono and have 65# spectra underneath it. By my calculations, I think about 300yds of 65# spectra will give me the 100yd top shot of 50lb mono that I need. Can anyone comment on that?
2. Weight is a concern but it's not the biggest concern I have. However, is there someone out there that has a glass 90j with a Saltist 50 that can give me a perspective on what it is like to throw this all day? Is it a pain in the arss?
3. High speed or low speed? I am thinking that the low speed is the way to go. I know Tady 45's don't like to be reeled too fast and I figure if I hook something big on it, I'd appreciate the lower speed.
So, what do you think? Is a Saltist 50 the answer to my question, or am I looking at something else like a newell of even a Saltist 40.
For the record, the 90j I am refering to is the one Randy built for me and I am thinking about getting the black one from Bass Pro. Here are the pictures of the rod and reel. Just not together....Yet
Just bought my second 50H, I don't think it's that heavy, I like it because it can work on the butterfly jigging too, can cast around 30-40 yds with 80# solid JB down Baja with 4oz iron, now I am looking for a 40 regular for more torge and lighter line for casting down there. I was only using a 6'6" ugly stick, so you should get more out of yours.
I have one and have used it for everything from fishing 50 lb and yoyo iron, to 40 lb for bait and jigs. All of the points you make are good ones, in favor of buying that reel. A friend of mine just picked one up from Bass Pro and it looks good in black.
Last trip, I got a little weary of throwing the surface plug with the long rod and tied a Tady 45 onto an outfit I had set up for bait. This reel, Saltist 50 with 4.9:1 gears, 40 lb line and a Seeker EX6470. I was able to throw that jig about as far as I was with the Ulua and the 533-5.5. I think you'll be pleased with the Saltist. As soon as I sell my 6/0, I'll probably buy the 40, also with the slower gears. This one will be for 40 lb bait fishing.
As far as handling 50 lb, the stock drags are pretty good, but just for shits and grins, I replaced them with a set of Carbontex, lightly greased, and they're like butta' and you can back it with a lot more than 100 yards of 50 lb spectra and still get all the topshot you need. Mine's backed with 65 lb Power Pro, probably around 300 yards, and I have a long topshot.

i think the 50 is a little wide, the 40 should do just fine, but i dont like wide reels. if you dont mind, then it should be a fine reel.
Even to fish 50lb? On a 5 Day or Longer? I don't like wide reels either. I like the 332 much more than the 338. The two things that were turning me onto the 50 is line capacity for the longer range trips when I will be running 50lb on it, and the way the black 50 would match my 90j better. I think the main problem I am having seems to be between the 40 and the 50 saltist. I just don't know....I wish they made the damn 40 in black. Then I wouldn't have this problem.
Oh, and 0831ww and steve k, thanks for the responses. I appreciate it...

thats a good thought. the extra line is nice to have, especially with 50, i must have missed that. the black does look slick, but keep in mind functionality vs. good looks. sometimes how it looks is a big factor tho, haha
If you bring a spool of 50 you can change out your topshot as needed. 50# with 65# spectra should stop whatever you need it to.
The 50 is a bit wide for my tastes. It tends to rock a bit as fatigue sets in. I actualy like the 30 better. 40# mono and 60# spectra. Asuming we are talking surface. With yoyo they already got you near the rocks so the heavy line makes it easier to muscle em. 40 is just easier to launch and covers the capacity issue.
As fot the color issue goes, I dont think the fish will care, but leave the black and the silver in the sun all day and your hands will.
Hey guys. Thanks for all the responses. I ended up picking up a Saltist 40 today from Baja Fish Gear(Thanks Guys). I love it but I am having trouble getting my Cork Puppy to work with it. Still in the process of cutting and grinding to make this fit right. I'll let you all knwo how it turns out. BTW, I just posted a request for someone with a tap and die to help me out in the "BD business hook-ups" sections. If anybody reading this wants to help a BD'er out, I need to add some threads to the post that came with the Saltist. Thanks guys.
Oh, and for the record, I already added some greased carbontex drags and opened up the bearings and cleaned/re-lubed them. Spins like a top and I am getting a very smooth 20lbs of drag with it. Much better than my P332 that this reel is replacing.

Right on Brian. I have a 40 on order as well along with 300 yds of 50 lb Power Pro for backing. I like the way you roll; brand new reel and you're just like me, gotta open it up and work it? I borrowed a 535 from a friend cuz my 15/30 has a stuck bearing. I ended up changing the handle to use one from a Speedmaster that fit right up, then degresed and oiled the bearings and changed the gears to the 5.3:1. A guy just can't fish a reel outa the box!
On that thread thing, is the handle on the rod kinda skinny? How about just building it up with some cork tape and covering that with shrink wrap?

Hey Steve. I am all taken care of. Here is a copy of what I posted over at GB. I am on my way to try it out later today. Again, thanks all for your offers and I'll see you out on the water...

Hey guys. Thanks for all of your offers. Fortunatly, I called Daiwa and they have a new frame for the saltist that has straight post instead of the bent bolts like the one I posted today. I went over there and they swapped if for me while I waited at no cost. I also picked up a Saltiga handle. Then, I went over to eureka bearings in huntington beach and picked up a bearing to replace the stock bushing that comes on the saltist. I put everything together this afternoon and I am stylin' now. Thanks guys...

For the record, the bearing in place of the the bushing makes a BIG difference...Highly recomended upgrade...

Well I find my 40H to have more than enough capacity at ~350yards of 50lb Power Pro and a short top shot but I can't claim to be a Long Range expert.
I have gotten into big Jacks (Toro and Pez Gallo) to 50 lbs and Yellow Fin Tuna to 75lbs or so with it and it handles them fine without any stress that I'll get spooled. And those fuckers can pull.
Narrower is always better for casting but you may be hard pressed to get some one that has used the 50 that much for a real first hand opinion as most guys are going Saltiga or Trinidad if their gettin' all serious.
Upgrade the drags to Carbontex and you got a really great reel for the $$$ imo. Really, given the stopping power of modern reels err on the side of small imo.
PS: Doh, this is what you get for posting a reply w/o reading the whole thread. Looks like you got it dialed, cool beans.
