| goofy neighbor needs reel?
A goof ball neighbor asked my recommendation for a star drag reel (no leverdrag?) to use on a 665h rod (make?) for yoyo and wants to keep it lite weight. I recommended a Baja special or 113hl/Yellowtail special........ he said too big and too heavy.
His among his picks for a #40 rig are:
Penn 555
Shimano star 20/40
Daiwa slx40 or slx50
or even the good old 500.
any ideas?? |

Of those choices, I'd go with the Daiwa slx50ha. Much lighter than the Penn and just a kick ass reel.

Saltist 40 hands down for those requirements. For me high speed version vs. High Torque but that is a personal choice. Both reels are fantastic, light weight and wonderful 40# star drag rigs right out of the box. One suggestion though, put the crank arm to it longest length for maximum leverage. It will not affect your ability to retrieve.

He should get the baja special. Tell him that a taller spool makes it easier to crank. It doesn't matter how light the reel is if it's a chore to wind.

If the line retrieved per crank is the same or more and the reel weighs 33% less, explain how this makes sense please.

basically what you do is look down, don't make eye contact, back away slowly and avoid this guy from now on. if he can't figure things out on his own or recognize good advice when he hears it, he should be avoided. he's wasting your time.
