ABALONE SHELF LIFE?

Got some abalone from a friend today (Wed.) that was collected Saturday from Bodega Bay. It is fresh and I was wondering how long is it good for? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: ABALONE SHELF LIFE?

I've always cleaned cut and frozen what little was left un cooked right away and it never sat in the freezer for more than a month.

Frankly very little ever made it to the freezer

Re: ABALONE SHELF LIFE?

I dont have any Idea about dead abs, however I do run an aquarium service and have found all shell fish spoil/rot/smell very quickly once they are dead. I would eat or freeze immediatly. fish left on deck loose one day of shelf life for every hour they are not chilled according to sportsmans seafoods, mario would know. squid spoil completly in less than two hours if not chilled and even then they can spoil depending on the amount of ammonia in their system when killed. The amount of ammonia depends on how much food they have been eating, and the time it takes for them to be killed (fight time)is also a factor in spoilage. I would assume that abs can stay alive if left in the shell for a decent amount of time you may be able to extend their shelf life by keeping them alive (bucket with circualtion) although I dont know if it is legal to transport them alive, probably not.
good luck

Re: ABALONE SHELF LIFE?

I think it may have already gone bad. Cut it in half, and IMMEDIATELY bring it by my place. I will test it for you to be sure it still tastes good!!! I get abs all the time, and they hold up well in the refer for 5 days . But I freeze them if I feel I can't eat them fast enough. They keep in the freezer for months. The meat is very solid, yet fatty. They hold up well.
