Re: Release board for sharks

SAVE THE SHARKS!
I Like it!

Side note:
I met Conway Bowman, he catches Mako's on the fly and then let's them go...
His biggest was over 600 pounds last year. CRAZY film footage! This dude is cool!

Re: Release board for sharks

Very cool. Sounds like a good plan since a garage can only fit so many freezers.

Re: Release board for sharks

That's a great idea. I hate to see sharks killed.

United Anglers was talking about trying to start a program where if you're going to release a fish, they'd have someone on the boat that could take a picture of it. The boats would have one of those small portable photo printers. At the end of the trip, the angler could buy a copy of the picture for $1. Money would go into the deckhand tip pool, thus reducing that temptation the deckhands have to try to find someone to take your fish when you're trying to release it. (The theory being part of why the deckhands want to keep the fish is so they make the extra $$'s filletting it...)

Re: Release board for sharks

A.D.D. Team Captain of last years Thresher Tournament, Boat Intimadator. I agree completely and practice this as much as possible. Last year in the tournament we had 2 releases and 1 we killed. We also lost 1 that came unbuttoned in the first 5 min. of the fight and 3 other knock downs. While one of my favorite types of fish to fish for is sharks it is always important to practice catch and release. What I want to do is to get my hands on some Mako and Thresher Tags so that I can start to tag the fish and see what we can track. If you are able to get anything on this please let me know. PM me on this years tournament.

We're not that sophisticated...at OAC we simply award points towards Angler of the Year and Boat of the Year for released sharks and marlin. I think you can also get points for other released species but BigJoe or Ken would know more about that.
