<<<Totally new, Where to Start, bait, setup?

OK normally i spearfish but i have a really bad sprained ankle so fat foot = no fins (not to mention the unbearable pain swimming would cause)
So i wanna start R&R fishing. I plan on going our sunday surf fishing for the first time. I have a 10ft rod with a shimano reel. (guy at local shop said it would work just fine) I bought some biodegradable rubber worm guys (lol as you can tell, no clue bout this kindda fishing) but all the post i read everyone seems to be using live bait of some kind?? I live in Orange county and plan on either newport or laguna area. (not sure where would be good for surf fishing being that with spearing i want reef but im assuming i should avoid reef) right now my gear is set up with i think 1/4 or 1/2 lead, swivel, 2footish leader and single hook. Im hopping for Hali and if not maybe a sheepy or perch lol hell anything ive been outta the water for so long just anything would be awesome. But hali is the goal. what u all recomend?

cam battery is dead so here is just a list of my pathetically limited gear.
10 foot rod
shirman reel (fx 2000)
Berkley "gulp" sanworm/grums
3/4 egg weights
1/2 egg weights
size 4 mosquito hooks
swivels
25yards florocarbon 10#

thats basically what i got and from what i read seems like that will all work, any suggestions?

Dont worry too much about buying a shiltload of lures from the start because trust me once you get hooked you will be blowing most of your money on anything that looks cool or makes u think it will help you catch more fish...oh and there are always the bargains...
I have a shitload of new and used fishing gear id sell for cheap if your interested.
