| Tuna Fishing Ban For Mexican Fleet Has Started | Mexico, November 30, 07 | Last week Tuesday 20 November, the Mexican Federal Government published in the Federation’s Official Diary the agreement to temporarily close tuna fishing in Mexican Pacific waters.
The agreement establishes the temporary closure of commercial catches of yellowfin Thunnus albacares), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), blue fin (Thunnus thynnus orientalis) and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the federal jurisdictional waters of the Mexican States of the ffice:smarttags" />Pacific Ocean.
It also prohibits vessels carrying Mexican flags to temporarily fish these species both at high sea, as evidently within the specified Mexican waters. However, the tuna vessels fishing with rods and the recreational fishing vessels are not subject to the ban.
The measures are attributable to the regulations stipulated by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) since 2001. These measures are aimed to stop the diminishing population of yellowfin tuna of going below the maximum sustainable level.ffice ffice" />
The ban covers the area from 40° longitude north from the coast of North America onto its intersection with the meridian of 150 ° west longitude; and then the meridian of 150 ° west longitude onto its intersection with the parallel of 40 ° latitude south, and this last parallel onto its intersection with the coast of South America.
The exact start of the ban was November 20th at 00.00 h. and will finalize on December 31st 2007 at 24:00 h.
With the entry into force of this temporary ban, the individuals or companies still holding stocks of yellowfin, bigeye and/or skipjack tuna, for wholesale marketing or industrialization, on the date of the start of the ban, will have to make inventory of their stock. This requirement is regardless of whether the tuna is fresh, chilled or frozen.
It is expected that the fishing ban will create a very urgent shortage for Mexican tuna canners during November – December and January and will have possibly push up tuna prices again. | |

So does a NOV-DEC 40day ban on tuna fishing actually do anything meaningful to conserve tuna stocks? Or is this just a scheme to drive up tuna prices in order to compensate for increasing oil costs so they can resume a profitable raping of the sea beginning with the new year?

I'll go with the half-full observation. It's a start. Surely a 40 day reprieve in July or August on the local banks would have let quite a number of fish through.
I am encouraged by the fact that this legislation is seiner specific. Allowing rod/reel and recreational catches to continue shows me that someone actually put some thought into this.
Thanks for sharing, Tommy.

Randall is spot on about the logic behind the so called ban

40 days of not raping the ocean during a time of the year when there is no local recreational fishing of that type anyways.....seems like it will make a big difference to us |
