| Rod-to-Reel expense ratio?
How much do you spend (as a ratio) on the two parts of a fishing rig?
Example; If you got a new reel for say $100, or $250, or whatever?
How much would you expect to spend for the matching rod . . . .
half as much for the rod (2-to-1 ratio)?
about the same amount as the reel (1-to-1)?
more than you paid for the reel (1-to-?)?
Just curious, Dave.

My main surf fishing gear I use twice a week, 45 weeks per year.
300$ reel(Daiwa Luna) and a 25$ Big 5 two piece cork handle special. I have several of the same rods. As they break or eyes get lost, I don't feel bad. I do plan on getting a better rod, just cheap I guess.

I don't keep track of how much I put into a rod. Too depressing!
Some of my Penn star drags are 30+ years old...
So I guess I put a lot more into rods... 'course, two of my Sabres are over 30...

Reels tend to be more expensive than the rods but usually not by more than 2:1. IE, a Calcutta reel and a Teramar rod. However, my Seeker Black Steel and Calstar Grafighter rods cost more than the Shimano Torium or Penn GS reels that I use with them.

Depends on what you're talking about regarding application...
Big Tuna rail rod will run you $400+ and the reel could be $500 plus spectra and flouro another +$100. Accurate can be up to $1500 for an 80W!!!
Jig sticks and such can be about one-to-one depending on what you like to throw. I like to throw a JX 6/3 on a GUSA 8.5 Monster Mag that my good best friend had wrapped fer me so cost is/was not an object.
Yellowtail paddy hopping special can be one-to-one as well but I like a 700M and an MXJ 2-speed which is like 1 to 3 in terms of cost.
Good luck on this one; like asking the wife what the getting the nails done versus the hair done cost ratio is. Both are frightening.

If it takes $1500 or $50 to get the rod and reel you want to fish with, spend it. To hell with the ratio. You only go around once, and life's too short to lose fish to crappy gear or old line or cheap ass hooks....unless you're into that. Buy the best you can get and fish it any way you want, just don't camp in the corner.
Or, 1.77:1 reel to rod.
