ok... i hear about dog beach being the best place to catch these things but i cant seem to locate them. i look for the vees, holes, and i dont even see any sand crabs there and i see those everywhere. can anyone who is really experienced in catching ghost shrimp please school me in on when, where, and how???? i have a pump but never get a chance to use it cus i cant find them. someone please help!! thanks so much
When I lived in O.B. we went in the lagoon coming by the 8. Walk down the beach and wait for low tide. Go into the lagoon and they should be there. Try going in about a foot of water. Then come back to dry. You will see the holes. Look for ones with some sand around the ring. That means they are in there.
If that doesn't work go to Sport Chalet and get some Gulp 3" shrimps in all colors.
We have used them and the sand fleas and worms. Good for perch and stuff.
Many times just finding the holes is not enough. Those holes can mark them but the y may be deep. Take 3 or 4 pulls make sure you are VERTICAL and see if it helps. Some times they are 6 inches but some I have gotten as deep as 2 feet.
Be sure your not pumping worm holes or clam vents too.
a really good spot for getting them is at the bridge that crosses from huntington to newport on the riverbed side. you have to wade out through water about up to your waist until you reach the sandbar that is out in the middle ,you'll start seeing holes everywhere in little pools.theres also alot of sole, and small halibut in there.
i appreciate all of your replies, some valuable tips!! im gonna try it hopefully i am successful.. if i cant do it i will have to pay someone to teach me the ropes lol. thanks again all
