Match the shape of the head to the swimbait (mostly shad style heads) same for color, match the swimbait head and body color. There will be times and swimbait colors where this won't work as well. Sand bass you will generally use chartreuse or red jigheads, One of my favorite sandbass combos is Big Hammer #24 (Bleeding Olive Herring) with a red jighead. Whereas for calicos I will more match swimbait and jighead (Big Hammer#46 and a green jighead) But then we gotta remember that the #1 selling color of jighead is plain (go figure). For weight I tend to go with the lightest weight I can get away with and still allow the bait to sink. I generally like a slow falling bait so that it actually will swim and stay in the strike zone longer.
but these are things that I do, everybody will have their own opinion
good luck,mike

Sand Bass - red
Calico - green
Light weight for slow sink
Thanks.

I settled down to 3/4 oz plain leadheads.
5 inch (can always cut shorter)
Root Beer - inshore
Newport Blue - offshore
For the charter passengers.

Spotted Bass get lighter wt & color

Debateable is heavier weight for throwing distance
to get a more horizontal crank thru strike zone.

Hook rips in the plastic can be welded shut with a cigarette lighter.

I forgot which "crazy glue' is touted for holding plastic to head??

whatever color and size is bit - the usuals are 3/4, 1, 1.5 oz shadheads in blue/grn/purp/chrome/yel/brn in 5 inch. Lingers use 3 and 4 ozers in 7 inch. Shadbody standard colors are channelchovy, dino, purplehaze, some with fins and red belly spots. Plain KrazyGlue to repair and bond to leadhead. Biggest trick is putting them on the hook straight so they won't spin on retrieve.

Monday at LJ we were drifting thru the so. kelp. Just working the open pockets. I was using 1/2 oz eyed heads plain. The calicos were just under the canopy. It was almost like the largemouth bass technique of flipping. Pitch underhanded into the gaps, let it sink 5-15'. The little shits would dart out of nowhere, one would grab it followed by 3-5 others. Hot color was brown back, chart stripe,clear/flake belly.

There's another Krazy glue that dosen't harden in
the tube after you use it. Can't remember the name??

Alby's always like smaller lure's, I prefer 5 inch.
