diver etiquette

We pulled up on LJ Sat afternoon and right on the NW kelp corner, exactly where we would have liked to anchor and fish, was a 14' tinboat with a dive flag and 2 free divers working the outside edge of the kelp.

What is the required distance to stay away from them? Also, I thought their choice of location left something to be desired. A little inconsiderate.

200 ft, Fishing diving spots are first come first serve. I'm sure he probably left in a hurry, I know I would'nt stay in the water with you at the helm of a boat in the vicinity

Thanks for the info, Bill. Want to go for a ride and give me a live critique, or are you happy to sit back and take cheap shots?

Re: diver etiquette

John, was it the same guy who let his boat drift away during the butt tourney?

He owes you, you get the spot!

Re: diver etiquette

I wouldn't call divers inconsiderate. We both need to share the spots. I have seen way too many inconsiderate boaters out at LJ. People being buzzed by boats, boats running over floatlines and ripping guns out of divers hands. If anything the fishing guys need to give spearfishers more room. If someone buzzes me they usually end up looking down the barrel of my speargun.

Too many idiots think a dive flag or spearfishing float means they should fly by as close as possible to it.
