Re: trolling rod and reel?

There is a guy selling a Penn 16S for $350 in the classifieds. I have this reel on a custom Calstar Baby Bommer. Great set-up for So Cal waters.

Remember, on an overnight boat, there are usually trollers that will stay out for your turn in the rotation if you didn't bring one.

Keep checking the classifieds. There are a ton of guys on here that are wrapping killer custom sticks. A lot of guys are replacing factory wrapped rods.

Re: trolling rod and reel?

If your trolling in a private boat the I use Avet single speed JX's with Penn 3135RS ($90 retail), roller top and bottom 6'6" 30lb rod. I load with straight 30lb mono and it is a good setup for anything but shark here locally.

I have a Calstar 660H RS RT 30-80 6 ', for sale in the clasified adds, As new for $140. I used it to troll with 60# line on a TLD 30 and it worked perfect. Let me know if you want to see it I work in Carlsbad.

Re: trolling rod and reel?

go with a penn 4/0 about 140 bucks then get a 665h seeker rod about 160 ? go to squidco and talk to joey or john they will hook you up , its a great economy setup but it has worked for years , great starter trolling setup

Re: trolling rod and reel?

Penn senator 113h spooled with 30 or 40lb test. With a heavy rod to match. I have caught all the three fish you mentioned above no problem with this cheap, cost effective setup.

Re: trolling rod and reel?

Probably want a 6/0 size reel for trolling. Most of the trolling you will do will be for Albacore, yellowfin and Bluefin. You might have the occasional BigEye bite your jig. Most of the boats in the fleet (SD) will want you trolling 6/0 gear or better, not 4/0. Probably can find a good deal on a used 114H, with aluminum side bars and spool, for a song, a decent (Seeker, Calstar, Penn, or Fenwick) rod rated for 80# test. You can also use this for a heavy rig if you ever get WFO bite on better bluefin or BigEye.

Re: trolling rod and reel?

I'd get a Shimano TLD25 or 30II for a reel and a St. Croix 20-40 or Shimano 20-40 to go with it. You can get away with a 20lb. outfit also if you wish to get sporty.

Re: trolling rod and reel?

I'd buy the Calstar that tootal has for sale above. Good dual purpose rod. Maybe I'll buy it though!
