Questions for trolling for albacore

What is the ideal pount test for albies? Also how many yards of line would be enough? Would spectra with mono better then just mono? What reel would be a good reel to start out with. I have an avet mxl, if i use spectra would that work? I am looking to troll with feathers. Or do i need to have something big the a penn 6/0?

Thanks

Re: Questions for trolling for albacore

Get a trolling reel and rod or if you go on sportboats use the boat rods.

Yes the MXL with spectra would work. We use 30lb test, sometimes fluoro, and a small tuna jig or cedar plug. If you get into some bigger fish you may need the bigger reels but give it a try. If you get spooled than you know.

Re: Questions for trolling for albacore

The two trollers that I use for albies/Yellow Fin Tuna/Blue Fin Tuna:

Penn 30 LD with straight 50# mono
Avet 4/02 with 60# spectra and 100 yards of 50# mono.

Most sporties will tell you to use heavier line for trolling because you want to get the trollfish to the boat quickly before the rest of the school sinks out.

Can you use 30#? Sure but I wouldn't.

Re: Questions for trolling for albacore

I use single speed JX's with straight 30lb Pline and a small 60lb Spro snap swivel. For rods I use Penn Special Senators (40lb) which are really nice and can be found on ebay cheap. This setup will catch anythiong we troll for on private boats offshore SD except shark. You could step it up and use braid to make sure you never get spooled but you don't need to.
