Surely someone out there knows how to catch a WSB off of the LJ kelp, right.....RIGHT?????? My tin can is almost ready to go back into the water and I'd like to see what a WSB looks like floppin' on my new, green deck. I know that the yak fishermen have been nailing these things recently on macs, but beyond that I don't know if they're being slow trolled just under the surface (and away from the birds, somehow) or if they're sinking them to the bottom (away from the lings, I presume) or if they're suspending them somewhere inbetween...
Anybody have any rigging/spot suggestions they'd like to pass along? Pleeeeease

| HUSH!!!
Hush there WaaTooSee! That there was me plan-----I just have to figure out how to disguise my 20' aluminum boat such that the iceman won't see me floating 10' off of his beam (does a kayak have a beam?). I figured that the yak fleet would be out and I"d just sort of pretend my boat is a rather large kayak and do whatever it is that they're doing. Chuck needs WSB!!!

Everything I have heard about catching local WSB has included the term stealth. So, I presume, if you want to catch one from a boat, you are going to have to anchor in a known hot spot ( N La Jolla kelp) or drift the same area, making as little noise as possible while soaking a nice mack or spanish mack on the surface, and one down deep for starters.
That, or bring a good pair of binocs, keep an eye on the kayaks, and just as they are about to land a fish, swoop in, gaff it and haul ass back to the docks

| finally, a use for my long gaff
Hey Mark, never thought of that . I have one of those 8' gaffs that I seldom use (not necessary when the waterline is almost comming over your gunwale) . Don't think a yak could keep up to me unless the ol' Johnson decides to go on strike.
Sean, the rig is almost up and running------won't be able to take a day off this week, but maybe next week provided that I get all of the bugs out of her. Keep intouch and I'll let ya know what's going on.

| Tried it
Tried to go Yak fishing in La Jolla on Friday. Wind was blown and it was rough. Yak guys were coming off the water early.....6am. Went to San Diego bay to give it a go, that is entirely too much work.............and cold and wet. Had a wet suit{shorty} and my fishworks gear on and still had well salted cold balls. I think all of my toys have to have motors on them from now on.
Chuck, buy a full scoop of bait, anchor up at the edge of the Kelp, and start the chum line. Chum heavy and constanty , let the WSB find you. Soak a mackie on a dropper loop. The Kayak thing sounds easier then it is. Casting while sitting on the surface of the water doesnt feel right. Try it sometime, sit flat on the deck of the boat and cast. Also I can see that the run and gun for bird schools aint happening, unless your Iceman then you dont need any of that.

When I lived back east I used to fish for smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna river from a kayak------and you're very correct. When your ass is at the waterline something just doesnt' seem right. Personally, I like to be able to stumble over my cooler full of adult beverege of choice, step on two rods and still have room to move around; not possible in a yak, not to mention that I'd probably flip upside down and that'd be that . I'm going to give that chum thing a go this weekend, either Sat. or Sun. One day I'm going to the islands, the other I'm going to the LJ kelp, but I"m not sure of the specifics yet---waiting for fish reports from later in the week. Either way, I'll be on 72 if yer around-----Hey Frank (WaaTooSee), my new Icom works great!

| creamed corn or kernel
I can see it now-----sitting in the shadow of the Iceman, covertly snuggled in the midst of a dozen yaks-----me, armed with a half dozen cans of Green Giant Whole Kernel and a flotilla of trout bobbers . What kinda self-respecting WSB could resist such a spread?

| Ok heres the real deal
You want to troll north La Jolla kelp with a slow trolled hot dog on dacron line with an international 80t. If you don't have one ask Byeye and he can lend you one.
Real deal. 20lb test preferrably blue line for low visability with 15-20ft florocarbon leader and a small wire hook. All the WSB I have caught have been on SpanishMack. They are always right of ballast point. Just watch the birds and use any sabiki or baitmaking rig. Get your ride as close into the kelp as possible. Start a chumline. Carolina keeper with as little weight as possible for the best presentation and a little luck never hurts.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I gotta feelin that one of those things is gonna give up the ghost this weekend . I think I"m gonna give it a try Sat. AM at grey light with a scoop of swimmers, a case of miller highlife (liquid patience) and a bag of doritos.
Are ya hooking the mac through the nose, like you would a dean being flylined, or through the ass end so he swims down a bit? What I t hought I'd do is anchor-up, chum and put about four rods out, two flylined on the top (nose hooked), one tail hooked and the last on the bottom.

| Thru the nose
Hey Chuck,
If the weather is right I may go give it a shot with you. I think byeye and MStonefish are gonna roll with me. Thru the nose gives the best presentation. If you gut hook him you'll have to change baits every 2-3 minutes or he'll die on you.
