Re: Are fishing websites

That totally depends on who you ask. Fishing sites, like BD, encourage and educate about responsible fishing and proper catch and release methods for newer or inexperienced anglers (myself included). Sport fishing represents a tiny fraction of overall fish harvesting, and is not subject to the massive waste and ecological damage generated by the commercial fishing industry. I doubt that there are many people who are 'one the fence' about whether or not they plan on fishing and get swayed over to the darkside by whats posted here, either.
All in all, sites like this are beneficial to both the fishing sport and fish populations overall, because when you know what you are doing, and how to do it correctly, it makes a world of difference out on the water, for both you and the fish.

Re: Are fishing websites

Mike,

I think in some ways that they are hurting the population. One example is thresher fishing. In the past, information about a thresher bite would have probably only propagated slowly via word of mouth. Now, thousands of people hear about it almost instantly. People who wouldn't otherwise be on the water fishing are now out taking fish.

Yeah all the Tank Top, beer drinking, muscle heads getting they're pics. taken and joining the fishing boards and looking for new friends!!! IMO the more of us that get out there and kill fish to feed ourselves the better while buying fish from wherever is probally not good for our fisheries but I do that tooooo........

Re: Are fishing websites

I think it depends also... I've learned alot on here about how to properly release fish. So that knowledge has helped save a few fish I'm sure.

Re: Are fishing websites

I know the boat and tacke makers love it.

Just wondering if the "new guys" would be in to it as much as they would be without the "free" info that's floating out there?

yaking $$ must have went crazy $$ wise. Without the internet where would you be....? the same place the other guys that always fish are....right?

Re: Are fishing websites

I wouldnt worry too much about fishing websites hurting the fish population. But I would worry about the Mexican Government passing the new legislation allowing by-catch and long liners (and many other devistating practices) to fish within 50 miles from the coast. These commercial fishing companies, in one day (1,200 hooks per line), can catch more than every BD'er in their lifetime (combined).

Sure we see people catching T Sharks out of LJ and Oceanside, but really Ive only seen 30-50 reports of caught sharks this year. Do you really think that has an effect on the population. Thats like say the airlines/hotel packages to Cabo or PV are hurting the Marlin/Tuna populations. Those companies are making trips down there affordable so now more people are doing it.

Re: Are fishing websites

i was just watching the news and they said that the worlds fish population is mainly going down because of sushi. in the past few years sushi has became so popular they sell it in every damn country around the world. they were showing the fish auctions with people buying 800lb tunas for like 2500 bux, sushi is whats causing the fish population to die not the internet.

speaking of sushi

Seau's Tempura Roll - smoked salmon, krab, avocado and cream cheese deep-fried in tempura topped with our signature sauce 12.50 topped w/spicy scallops 14.50

at raw mana . its inside seau's restraunt in mission valley. i never liked sushi till i ate this

As Al Gore invented the internet, He is personally responsible for the proliferation of fish killers like Brad. I say blame Al Gore, not Bloodydecks.
