Star drag vs. lever drag...thoughts?

Is a lever drag reel enough of an improvement over the star drag system to warrant the usual difference in price? Im talking smaller reels, btw. I realize that in the larger class reels that the newer lever drag systems arent even in the same class as a star drag as far as the other improvements made in modern reels (avet 30 vs penn 4/0 for example). Im considering buying a Torium 16/20 and I've heard for the price they cant be beat, but is it worth it to spend a bit more and get something comparable from Avet (as an example)? I'm trying to weigh cost vs. convenience vs. any other factors I dont know about because I've never owned a lever drag reel. Any advice or opinions on the subject would be helpful.

Do advanced search, many threads on this comparison have been discussed.

Apples and oranges, both are good, just depends on your application.

my $.02 would be that with a lever drag, you can "see" where your drag is set.

I mean the lever is right there, you look down and know instantly how much pressure (roughly) your reel is gonna put on a fish.

With a star drag, you're just guessing unless you manually check it, because there are no index markings or other indicators.

Re: Star drag vs. lever drag...thoughts?

I own two toriums and they were my go to reels last year. I then bought an avet jx and I'm hooked on the lever drag. So I'm getting a couple mxls this year to be my go to reel. I like knowing where my drag is. #1 reason... no one I go fishing with knows what the fuck they're doing with drag and always fuck up my star drags. In the morning I'll set them to 1/3 breaking strength, but midday who the hell knows.

I know with level drags they won't know enough to put it in freespool and mess with the dial. Plus they're just cooler :O
