Being that i read two threads of the same topic under two different catagories, it has inspired me to post this poll.
What do you folks fish with? Whether long range and/or Local.
Thx in advance.
Not that i really give a shit...
i saw it in "nonsense anything board" and in "Reel Discussion". Shouldn't they both be in here? "Fishing Chit ~ Chat"??

This is a tough one. Different situations call for different techniques.
Straight mono when fishing the iron.
Straight spectra night time bass fishing or hunting on the wall.
Normally spectra w/ short mono topshot for most bait fishing inshore and offshore
then spectra w/ short floro topshot during a pick bite.
These are our tools and you just need to know how and when to use them.

I don't think I have any reels left with straight mono but I'm sure I have a few reels with long enough topshots that I'll never see the spectra.

I voted straight spectra with a short flouro topshot, but.......
There are a couple of variations.
1) surface iron with my Ulua has enough mono to cast all the way, 100 yards or so.
2) my wahoo jigstick reel has enough mono that I'm not touching spectra while winding, 100 feet or so

Im still trying to find out what I like best. For the Seabass (what I do most) I like the spectra, With a short top shot of floro. Im going to try straight spectra this friday night and stick it out and see if I can get bit.

Not only will you have 3 knots that could fail but you will be winding in the knot from the mono / flouro connection every cast.
I like to keep it simple and go spectra to mono or spectra to flouro.
Just try them both and find the one that works for you.

I agree, too many knots, flouro stretches, why add mono?

Originally Posted by wahoodad I agree, too many knots, flouro stretches, why add mono? | This makes sense. But I still use a tall topshot of mono to about 12' of fluoro. I splice the spectro/mono with an albright and mono/fluoro with a uni-uni. I never really notice the albright going through the guides, and the uni knot never goes through the guides with a fish on anyway. But, I like having a good amount of stretch in the mono. Sometimes I look at the condition of the hookset after I land a fish and find that once in a while, the hook is really close to pulling through the flesh/cartilage after a struggle. I wonder if a line configuration with less stretch would be more susceptible to pulling the hook completely through during the course of boating the fish.
