Down in SD I usually go to OB. Here's a good link: Beacons Beach - Surfrider Foundation

It's a damn cool thing.

Re: Grunion runs,...

just make sure you leave the first few "scout" grunions alone...they warn others if its safe or not...i swear it...it happened to me. you could see the grunion in the surf,,,a few came ashore..saw myself and my buds with our lights and rods and whatnot...they spooked out and the rest followed...kinda trippy,,,didnt think they were that observant, especially when all they wanta do is mate.

Absolutely correct!

I haven't seen a grunion run in a long time, but I was warned about not bothering the "scout" fish by one of the regulars at the old Roy's Tackle in Dana over twenty years ago.

A few of us were fishing Doheny Beach at night and after checking the tide book, we found out there was a predicted run that night. We hung around and when we saw the first few come up on the beach, we left themn alone. They did their thing, caught a wave back out, and about 7 or 8 waves later the whole beach turned silver with the wiggly little suckers!

It was a wonderful thing to witness!

Re: Grunion runs,...

I hate it when there are people flashing their lights, if they are there, no light is needed. I found em 2 weeks ago on the first scheduled run. Heard of plenty of sightings throughout SD. Darker spots are best. They showed this night only in the darkest spot, right next to the jetti.

Re: Grunion runs,...

Roger that. Kids love em. But dont fuck with the scouts, otherwise its a no show. Buy some grunion swimmies and hit the beach hard the next AM. Lots 'O flatties ready to chew.
