"Altered Oceans" Scary stuff. Good reading

Dear Fishing Colleagues,
I hope to continue fishing and someday go fishing with my grandchildren. Isn't that why we catch and release?
But after viewing this multi-media article in the LA Times, I am scared all we might be able do is harvest jellyfish, which is already happening in some East Coast fisheries.
I studied marine biology 20 years ago and learned all about what could happen. Well... it already has.
Please follow this link and play with the muti-media section so the videos and graphics come up. Oh yeah... read the text!
Click here: These videos are a must view.
(BTW. Sorry to be such a buzz buster)

Here are some stats:
 • Large game fish have declined 90% over the past 50 years.
 • California kelp forest, which are a nurturing habitat for fish and other sea life, have declined 75% over the past 50 years.
 • 650 Grey whales has washed up sick or dead on the West Coast over the past 7 years.
 • There has been 150 oxygen depleted "dead zones" identified around the world.
 • [FONT=/>
 • In the past 50 years there has been a 75% decline of the So. ffice:smarttags[/IMG]
 • Florida coast since 1975.
To paraphrase part of the series:
Altered Oceans: Part One
A Primeval Tide of Toxins
Runoff from modern life is feeding an explosion of primitive organisms. This ‘rise of slime,’ as one scientist calls it, is killing larger species and sickening people.
Moreton Bay, Australia - The fireweed began each spring as tufts of hairy growth and spread across the seafloor fast enough to cover a football field in an hour.
When fishermen touched it, their skin broke out in searing welts. Their lips blistered and peeled. Their eyes burned and swelled shut. Water that splashed from their nets spread the inflammation to their legs and torsos.
“It comes up like little boils,” said Randolph Van Dyk, a fisherman whose powerful legs are pocked with scars. “At nighttime, you can feel them burning. I tried everything to get rid of them. Nothing worked.”
As the weed blanketed miles of the bay over the last decade, it stained fishing nets a dark purple and left them coated with a powdery residue. When fishermen tried to shake it off the webbing, their throats constricted and they gasped for air.
After one man bit a fishing line in two, his mouth and tongue swelled so badly that he couldn’t eat solid food for a week. Others made an even more painful mistake, neglecting to wash the residue from their hands before relieving themselves over the sides of their boats.
For a time, embarrassment kept them from talking publicly about their condition. When they finally did speak up, authorities dismissed their complaints - until a bucket of the hairy weed made it to the University of Queensland’s marine botany lab.
Samples placed in a drying oven gave off fumes so strong that professors and students ran out of the building and into the street, choking and coughing.
Scientist Judith O’Neil put a tiny sample under a microscope and peered at the long black filaments. Consulting a botanical reference, she identified the weed as a strain of cyanobacteria, an ancestor of modern-day bacteria and algae that flourished 2.7 billion years ago.
ALTERED OCEANS: PART TWO
Sentinels Under Attack
Toxic algae that poison the brain have caused strandings and mass die-offs of marine mammals - barometers of the sea’s health.
ALTERED OCEANS: Part Three
DARK TIDES, ILL WINDS
With sickening regularity, toxic algae blooms are invading coastal waters. They kill sea life and send poisons ashore on the breeze, forcing residents to flee.
ALTERED OCEANS: Part Four
Plague of Plastic Chokes the Seas
On Midway Atoll, 40% of albatross chicks die, their bellies full of trash. Swirling masses of drifting debris pollute remote beaches and snare wildlife.
ALTERED OCEANS: Part Five
A Chemical Imbalance
Growing seawater acidity threatens to wipe out coral, fish and other crucial species worldwide.

Please pass this information on. It is not a hoax or a meant to be chain-letter.
Sincerely,
buk

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.
Doom and gloom litany to support grant money paying mortgages of happy PhD's cruising the world for water samples.
Well meaning "conservationists" on the side of the angels with their collective utterances who ask us to accept without question their pejorative broad brush emotional headlines and immediately make their soap boxed statements the basis of State, National and International policy.
The global fisheries as a renewable resource is no more endangered to that extent than the global chicken supply.
Try reading reports from scientists whose sole purpose is to track on reality.....

and then report to over a dozen countries.
Try the real deal.
My Marina's water isn't tainted......IT'S FUCKING TOXIC.
A few more chemicals poured in by another manufacturing plant or some more raw sewage from the Navy and I'll never have to paint the bottom of my boat again.
All these do gooders are always pointing their cannons in the wrong direction. US !!!!! You want fish for your grandchildren ? Go get the global longline and seiner fleets and tell them to shut down for a few years. You can start at the Mexican border and work your way South.

Anyone who is well read in the fisheries knows that the couple dozen fish we catch a year per private boater pales in comparison to the worldwide catch and a 90% decline is totally inaccurate.

650 dead grey whales ? so what ? Show me 650 autopsy reports that tell me that they ingested oceanic toxins and I'll donate to Green Peace. For all I know, that's the natural trend of the global population. You know, some of them have to die. I'm sure that Orcas probably ate as many or more.

The Elkhorn and Staghorn have almost entirely disappeared from Florida.....oh shit, I know where they are.
They all went to Montana, a friend of mine is shooting the shit out of them in Poulson.

If I hear one more plea for releasing fish for your grandchildren I'm going to puke. Why do all these emotional uneducated worried arm chair once a year fishermen use their grandchildren?

I donate my money to United Anglers.
If you're not a current marine biologist who studies and reports on our fisheries........your opinion is about the same as mine about the Raiders going to the SuperBowl.

Don't hate!
The sky is falling??? Stop your whining and pay attention.
I am not greenpeace advocate. Just puttin out some facts.
I am not a marine biologist just saying I dabbled in it years ago when all this ecology stuff started. At that time I thought it would never effect me. (Wrong) Besides, I didn't do the research in this article. Just passin it along.
I am not saying not catch and releasin is depleting our resources. Believe me I catch and fillet but never waste.
I TOTALLY agree with your point about purse seiners and that sportfishing accounts for so little of the fish taken it is negligible.
My opinion IS just the same as yours (JMHO).
I think you are a idiot if you honestly think our oceans are not getting ruined. JMHO
Why don't you watch some of the videos since you obviously can't read. Click the link... I dare your! Obviously you didn't otherwise you would see the irreversible damage that's been done.
I wish you were right that the damage is reversible. But you are not.
Glad you donate to United Anglers (BFD).
Your boat is awesome but you're a bafoon

Hey Bad Dog,
Sorry to be so defensive but I get riled when referred to as a 'conservationalsit' (in the wrong way) or thrown in there with greenpeace.
I take back calling you Tom Lycis (Oh... That was off screen)
You still better watch for banannas on yer boat when I'm down there.
Fish hard,

Dear 64 yrs old mistaken,
Old guy can you turn up the hearing aid and put on the bottle cap glasses. No one said anything about private boaters being responsible for much. I have read some stuff of yours "Bad Squirle" and you have some good post not this one though. Q: did you eat the halibut you caught in the marina at the coral?? Sounds like you got the brain thing like the seal in the video. They gave that thing the "Juice" .Good thing you dont have to worry about much for another 8 or so years and then youll be...........:Exploding ?
Its not all sportfishing thats fuckin stuff up its the commercial boats plus pollution or whatnot. But fuck who cares anyway. Chickens WTF? yeah they farm raise fish too but there not foster farms. elk ,pandas fuck em. Right ? Montanas great for Elk hunting and gettin it on with you own sister.Good times right there. at least we got zoos. Youre friend hunts like Dick Chaney. You should go with him sometime. P.S. Youre cool
You cant teach a "dumb dog" new tricks I mean Bad.

Re: "Altered Oceans" Scary stuff. Good reading

The only person that has given any scientific evidence to support his point is Bad Dog. Did any of you actually read the links he posted. If you didn't, read them before you throw out any more derogatory comments to Bad Dog.

The video is simply an enviro commercial. That video is tailored to the ignorant masses that never bother to actually read the scientific papers on the subject. Science is about studying all possible cause and effect. To this point, let me give an example about the decline in kelp in California:

There is more evidence that we are coming out of a mini ice age than there is to support the global warming theory. Why was Greenland called Greenland. It was named by the Vikings that found a lush, green tropical environment. As the water temperature rises as it has done thousands of times in the Earth's life, kelp population will decline. Is this a result of global warming or a retreat from a mini ice age?

If it's a retreat from a mini ice age, the enviros can't raise any money to stop something that the earth does on it's own. Therefore, the general, ignorant, too lazy to read population never sees all the evidence of this retreat.

I will agree that too much pollution is spewed into the ocean. The sad truth is that the US has no control over the pollution of other countries. The only solution is a global solution that makes all countries accountable for their pollution levels.

The enviros know they can't play a part in any international solution, so they con the general public into giving them money for programs that have no chance of working.

Remember, the enviros have become entrenched in big business. They are a multi-billion dollar industry that needs the ignorant public to give them money to survive.

1. I don't drive no fucking Prius hybrid and I'm a short haired blonde. I'm getting my money's worth out of Iraq with my Ram Hemi. Bad Dog stickers are all over Ensenada as the local Captains claim to be on the Bad Dog Fishing Team and stick the decals on their cars.

2. I don't fish in the Marina Coral, except for bait. If you read the post it was someone else that I know and he caught the halibut and I was hoping he knew better not to eat it as I've been warning him about this issue.

3. Buck, my only issue with you is that you pimped sensational general headlines and yes I did read it all and saw the videos. You didn't write that shit. My objection is to those who create these sensational headlines to promote their cause as saviours of our seas. I backed up my statements with scientific reports from degreed marine biologists. Those headlines are just plain inaccurate and that 90% figure was written to get your attention, too general, not specific, and outlandish. The marine biologists and fisheries experts would totally disagree with that statement and if you dig into the websites I listed you will learn about our global stocks with comparison to historical data. I could tell you that 1,275,642 birds fall out of the sky every year choking to death from airborne contaminants and we have to immediately shut down worldwide manufacturing. Send $1,000 to "Save The Fucking Birds of The World Association"(The FBWA for your check) so I can fly all over the world demanding all manufacturers to shut down immediately. My first trip will be to Madeira and I'm taking my 130's.
