Re: sea urchin

I believe the limit is 35 or 36..before harvesting an area, find a spot with kelp and break one open to check the roe..if milky or dull yellow, it isn't good....look for bright yellow roe..they look good with a Christmas bow attached.... a long handle 3-prong garden rake makes a good hook to pull them loose from the rocks...

Some of the most prized uni served in Japan is actually from Santa Barbara, Oxnard, and Catalina. Happy hunting. Bring some rice with you.

Re: sea urchin

I see lots of them when I dive Crystal Cove (actually Cameo Shores) You do not want the small purple ones, the big long spine ones are hidding normally under ledges. I use them as fish attractant. I bash up a bunch of them with the butt of my speargun. (Once I found myself bashing them with a loaded gun pointed at my chest, I remember to only do this with the gun unloaded (Darwin moment past). They are easy to find and catch. I have never eaten one but they are the rightkind.
