proper reel placement on cork tape rods

was talking to a pinhead the other day about a corktape rod and reel placement. he was telling me to put the butt in my arm pitt and whever my elbow landed on the rod was optimal reel placement. any truth to that i know there is no "proper placement" just sounded like a logical technic i've always just mounted my reels with the "yeah that looks good technic" but would move them if they were in the "wrong" spot thanks for the input brad

My $.02, Grab the base of the rod with your left hand (assuming you're right handed) put your right hand up to a point where you feel you have good leverage on the rod for optimum casting. Put it there. There is no science to it.

Alot of that depends on the weight of the rod, the use, and the build of the fisherman.

Big guy like you gets nothing but cork tape.

But, things to consider; is it gimballed, where do you wear you fighting belt (up high or John Wayne style), how far away from your body is it comfortable for your hands to hang, are you dropping it over the side, or casting it out?

I've only built a few, but thats what I go by.

Re: proper reel placement on cork tape rods

Do what Cuda/Hoo killers says. Botton of rod to your left elbow, place reel where your hand would be holding the reel. That's how the custom rod makers measure it. For a jig stick you may want to go longer/higher.

For fishing flyline bait or dropper-loop/Yo-Yo, do what Cuda recommended.

For throwing surface iron, do what Stringer recommended.

Re: proper reel placement on cork tape rods

I have long arms and short legs and I've tried those same practices for reel placement, on the first 2 slay trips I felt semi uncomfortable grinding them in with the placement of the reel ( everybody else loved it ) I moved the reel about 3" up and bingo ! I'm dialed, take your gear to the park with a helper and a hookless ?? and see what feels right for you and make the adjustments on land , fine tune it on the water if needed ( you will ) my $.02
