I've heard that the torium gear ratio 6:1 is to fast for trowing surface iron from a couple of real experienced fisherman , but have also heard people say they use it for trowing surface iron. What do you guys think?

I use that and a Newell 332 for Iron. The Newell has a 5 to 1 ratio and when I use the Torium I just have to remember to wind slower. Once you get used to it its very comfortable to have the faster ratio. What I did to slow it down a bit was move the handle to the longer setting. Its worked out much better for me.

I dig the torque the torium has. even after you hang a toad, you can turn the handle. what ever you are comfortable with is what you should get.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT REEL YOU USE. THE JIG SPEED IS KEY. CAST OUT 50% AND WIND IT IN WHILE WATCHING THE LURE IN THE WATER. IF THE JIG IS SPINNING, YER WINDING TOO FAST....IF IT IS COMING IN WITH NO WIGGLE, YER WINDING TOO SLOW. YOU WANT THAT SURFACE IRON TO KICK BACK AND FORTH. A COUPLE OF PRACTICE CASTS SHOULD MAKE YOU KNOW WHAT CRANK SPEED YOU SHOULD HAVE WITH WHATEVER REEL YOU DECIDE TO USE.

They call the Pen jig master a jig master for a reason, The Newels are great as are the toriums, however a tricked out jig master. will do the trick for less money. As far as gear ratios remember that the higher the ration the less leverage you have, combine that with a long rod and you can build a combo that will kick your ass on the long rod. If you can find the Highspeed jig master with a 5-1 with a tiboron or accurate frame you will compete with all the shiney reels, and save a little loot. it must be noted that I am a deckhand and my jig rod lives on the boat and only gets salt water for lube and maitinence, so the expencive shiney reels just dont take the abuse like the old penns. IMO

The gearing on the old stuff does not compare as well to the new stuff. I know that my Torium with is high speed 6 to 1 will have more cranking power than the Penn's 4 to 1.

Where's the logic in that Juan? Don't get me wrong, I like my trinidad, but it lives at home while my Newell lives on the boat for the same reason Justin gave, but a 4:1 gear ratio = more torque than 6:1. I mean that's just simple physics. Granted you can't make up much ground with 4:1 and Newells and Newelled/Tib'd out penns will never be as buttery smooth as a TOR/TN but I destroyed a TOR 20 last summer in less than 3 months. Didn't even catch any yellows with it. It just ate itself. On the otherhand, I have a newell 220 that's been serviced once in 12 years and still works like a charm.
Put a Torium handle on a 500 or a 332 and you'll feel like you have more "cranking power" just from the additional leverage.
And if you do want to make a penn smoother try the toothpaste trick

High Efficiency Gearing.
I use a Newell also a P332 that I love it for jigs but this guy was asking about a Torium not a Newell. I fish 30 on the Newell and 40 on the Torium, despite the higher ratio I feel the Torium is better suited to fish 40 than the Newell.
If was a deckie like you and Justin the Newell is a much better choice, but is this guy a deckhand who will leave his stuff on the boat?

Don't really have enough green to trick anything out or buy a Newel right now , but this reply pretty much anserws that question.
