Identifying the current and other questions?

Ok ive been reading and the main thing everyone talks about is the current. Im taking my brother out to catalina on saturday to hopefully show him big brother knows how to fish. With all the talk about current how do you identify where it is and if its a good current? I know its a retard question but shit i just dont know. Also when we go out there where do i et the live squid from? What channel do i find him on? Also im getting some fin bait from dana, can i mix the squid in with them? Also if anyone would devulge some hot spots (lat/long) man i would appreciate it. Thanks all

Ray

Re: Identifying the current and other questions?

You'd like the current going into the kelp or structure so that the chum you toss out gets pushed into the area holding the fish to pull them out and draw them closer to your boat. You can usualy tell if there's current or not by checking out the kelps. Looks to see which way the kelp is leaning over and for current breaks around the kelp. This will show you the direction of the current and also how fast its moving. Straight up and down kelp with no breaks means no current. You can hail the squid boats on chnl 11 and I wouldn't mix the fin bait with the squid. If your worried about not getting any live stuff at the island stop by a asain market before you split and buy about 15 to 20lbs of fresh dead. They usualy sell it for .99 to 1.49 a pound. Wish I had info on some hot spots but thats hard info to get. Good luck.
