oh, man.
I like circle hooks, for most everything, now that I am used to them.
Ringed, is better.
I always have some J hooks along too, in case it goes stupid wide open.
not many of us have a strong opinion either way..... |

Sands | circle hooks were used quite a bit by long liners and rock codders. the reason is: you dont need to swing to set the hook. times have changed with the popularity of spectra which makes making the choice even more difficult.
for tuna and yellowtail fishing, i always go with circle hooks. circles are designed to imbed in the corner of a fishies mouth, which reduces your chances of getting chewed off. when fishing light line, that makes using a circle importante and puts the odds in the fishermans favor. i like to fish the lightest line i can get away with most times, and using a circle gives me some confidence that i'm not gonna get chewed off.
for bottomfishing there is a dependancy: are you using mono or spectra?
for mono- definetly use circle hooks cause there aint no way in hell you are gonna *set* a hook with 300yards of bellied out mono between you and the fishes jaw. the fish will hook itself when it tries to walk off with your bait. that is the beauty of fishing circles on deep drops with mono- no need to try and swing at a bite.
for spectra (what i prefer to use)- i fish with J hooks. i fish straight spectra with a 24" mono leader and i can feel every rock, nibble and twitch of my bait....even at 300+ feet.
for "slurp" eaters, like calico bass, i always fish a J hook regardless if i am fishing mono or spectra. in my experience i have found that using circles for calico's is a lot more difficult and i hook less.
it basically boils down to what you are comfortable with, and how much you enjoy setting the hook on a fish. both styles of hook work just fine.

I like to use J hooks, I like them for the bottom, kelp and islands. Just started to use circle hooks for tuna and they work great but it takes a little getting used to.

I don't care what anybody sez...
Circle hooks pull more frequently than J's and J's get chewed off more than circles. That's my story & I'm sticken to it!
Ringed hooks and crimped leaders get bit better. I've seen too much evidence to believe otherwise.
If Blue Fin Tuna are on the menu, I'd go circles. I've never been chewed off by a 'core, so they get ringed Flyliners.
Oh yeah... if yer hooks are sharp there's no need to swing for the fences...unless yer on a fishing show...

I used circle hooks for the first time a couple weeks ago at the SCI trip that everybody went to. For rockfishing it did the trick. Even managed to catch a whitefish on a 5/0 circle, whcih surprized me cuz they have little moths and this one couldn't have been more than 3 at the most. Thats my penny's worth.
Sincerely,
Chance
