Re: VERY Bad news for West Coast Salmon fishermen

Actually it is good news. The restricted fishing only only applies to commercial fishing. This will help to insure there are fish to catch in the future.

Tough to swallow for the commercial fleet. Rather see them shoot the dogs that are decimating the numbers.

This quote cracked me up:

There are plenty of salmon in the ocean, but it's nearly impossible to catch those salmon without taking Klamath fish because fishermen can't distinguish between salmon from different rivers.

Duh!

It was my understanding after reading the article that is more of a commercial crack down ???? Rec fisherman won’t necessarily be all that affected ???

...."The council voted to impose minor restrictions on recreational salmon fishing, but sport fishermen were generally pleased.

"We're very satisfied with the outcome," said Bob Strickland, president of the United "

Actually you are correct. I am thinking of the mom and pop salmon fleet and the sporties up there that fish them. Personally Salmon have never turned me on. Getting on a boat to ride in 8 foot seas to mooch and get all of 2 fish ( that really didn't fight very much) and go home was less exciting to me than getting 20 huge surf perch on 4 pound. I WILL be going to Alaska this year to try their fish but until then................................

Re: VERY Bad news for West Coast Salmon fishermen

I have to agree with you JIGZ, however any time someone shuts off the opportunity for sportfishing I get my hackles up. I participated in the emailing, petition passing and Coastside rally at the PFMC, just to hope we maintain the right to fish for 'em if we want to. I'd rather fish swimbaits on Spectra than just about anything. Ran

Re: VERY Bad news for West Coast Salmon fishermen

Thanks for the help with the emails as it did make a difference

We up here in the Kalmath zone are going to loose the month of August, the commercial folks are going to get kicked in the balls and be shut down, they will be able to fish further north and south of Ft. Bragg so it means additional hardship for them.

Also it's not a done deal as the NMFS still needs to approve it so we won't know untill 5/2.

As for the salmon they are not exactly drag burners, they fight like a big WSB, pull hard a couple of times and then just lay over and say OK reel me in now. But there isn't a whole helluva lot else a guy can fish for up here salmon, rockfish, Lings and crab, halibut, oh yeah and Mud Marlin.

Albacore if it's a good year, no WSB, Yellow Fin Tuna, Yellowtail, bonito.

Thanks again for the help on the emails
