| Rick O's, system for connecting spectra to mono
At the Del Mar show Rick O. gave his new "system" for connection of spectra to mono. You'll need to find Berkely's new [hollow only] spectra, on sale at Fisherman's Landing tackle store, at the show. Berkeley spectra has more fibers, and will expand to accomadate heavy mono, such as 135# mono into their 80# spectra, or 200# mono into 130# spectra, etc. You can run heavy mono into spectra, use the Sato crimp, glue it , and you're done. No loop to loop needed, and it's very tidy, small diameter, and clean. Maybe Rick will be handling the Berkeley spectra, and can tell us where to get it. l

Jerry Brown spectra does the same thing. Sorry to point this out but this is not a new system.

As I was told, JB doesn't expand enough to thread 135# mono into 80# spectra, or 200# mono into 130# spectra. The Berkeley has more fibers and does hold the heavy mono. I think with JB you need another sleeve, such as 130# to 200# and then put your 200# mono in the 200# spectra. Berkely eliminates the need for another connection.

If it's made as you say, then it's going to be more than 2500 yards of 80# JB Hollow which is like $500. AND any hollow will expand as much as you want it to as it is a weave.
I've also heard that you have to be really careful where the mono ends inside the spectra as you deform the spectra enough (at that point) and it loses its strength. I guess we'll get to see some of it soon.

But why would I put 130# mono into 80# spectra. I size my outfits to each other. There are tons of ways to do this splicing stuff. I still prefer doing a loop to loop. I can make all my top shots at home prior to a trip and never have to splice anything on the boat, just tie bimini's in my terminal spectra.
On my big gear for marlin leaders I splice right into the 200# hollow JB which my reels are filled with. I can get 300# leader into JB 200# spectra, so all good.
For the most part I believe in keeping line size close to each other, and no matter what type of spectra, if you are lighter line into heavier spectra (50-60# plus difference) the splice will start to slip. I have worked pretty close with Gary Sato on the subject.
