Poppers for local YT?

I have been wanting to throw topwater (not the true poppers), since using Spooks on the Reds in Texas a couple years ago.

I was surprized yesterday, when a tackle store owner told me that I would not be able to get local Yellowtail to go on poppers, even on boiling fish. He thought I would have to go south. I will be trying to prove him wrong this Spring.

I would think the Boneys would be good practice. Fishing calicos, that would definately be right up there on the fun meter with surface iron.

Anybody use them in our waters? Any success? Walking the dog? What types? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Poppers for local YT?

I dont see why they wouldnt work on local fish, After throwing them in PV last week I intend on adding a few to my arsenal. The thrill of watching fish come all the way out of the water after these things is awesome even when the fish dont stick. Andy, I predict you will prove this guy wrong

Re: Poppers for local YT?

I have used the Yosuri popper at Clemente on the Yellowtail with great success. On those flat calm Clemente days when the Yellowtail just breeze along the front side from the east end to the domes and back the poppers are a blast. You will literally watch the school turn and bolt right for the popper and its a race to the popper between the fish. Best type of fishin going IMHO

Granted not all day will be productive with a popper. Also the summer Dodo's around the paddies with a popper can be fun.

Re: Poppers for local YT?

I can't believe someone would tell you it doesn't/won't work. I do it all the time...actually prefer the surface jigs to bait. Especially successful when they are on the surface pushing bait. I've caught Yellow Fin Tuna, Blue Fin Tuna, Albies, Yellowtails, Bonies, Calicos...you get the idea. Sometimes the skip jig is the only thing that will get bit...even when they aren't eating bait. It works, and I get wood watching fish crash my jigs...I suspect you will too. What else you gonna do if your bait rolls out there 100 miles...turn around and come home pissed, and disappointed. Adapt and overcome!

I always have a rod with a popper on it. It does work great and its a blast to fish with.

Re: Poppers for local YT?

Owner Cultiva topwater in mac or blue/silver. I decided to throw it once when the calicos were stupid. The 3-5 chasing a hooked fish calicos . About 5' of walkin the dog, bam. Never put a f/t back on that day.

Can't see why it wouldn't work on yellows, necessary speed could be an issue.

I've seen Denis/Forktail whack the shit out of albies with the popper.

Andy you tried skip jig yet? Top water iron rod tip in the air winding fast.

Re: Poppers for local YT?

i used a zara spook two years ago on a patty at the 371 and got 2 rat yellows walking the dog. They liked it but were kinda finicky compared to putting a live dean in front of their face.
